New York is shifting to places such as Philadelphia and Houston. I bet that Iowan I overheard on the Metro North train talking to her parents that night might be headed back home along with other Midwesterners.
It's nice to see Center City starting to have the chance that Manhattan denied it 200 years ago.
Detroit has too good of a location since it is a large metro area on the Canadian border (the southernmost tip actually). But it may have a harder time recovering since it doesn't have the attractive lakefront like Chicago or Cleaveland.

And at the same time, America is on the verge of depression. At the same time, much of the world is on the verge of recession and depression. Why? Because Wall Street is struggling. The power of one little street.

What do you mean by shifting to those cities?

I imagine that people can no longer afford NYC and relocating to more affordable places. This has been going on in NYC for a long time now. The rich move in and the poor move out.

I believe Detroit will make a comeback. Its metro has a population of over 5 million so it has too. It has a chance, it might not be soon, it will take a while, but i believe that Detroit is coming back. They will have to find new industries to rely on if the big 3 go bankrupt. The city can start bringing in high tech jobs like the rest of the rust-belt cities are as theyre trying to rebuild their economy. I just think Michigan needs a new governer and Detroit needs some good government its self if Detroit is going to come back.

I have a feeling before this is over that you guys are going to actually be worse off than a lot of other places. Too many high-paying jobs have been concentrated in the Financial industry there lately, not a good thing.

Hey John Starks thanks for the apology for slamming me when I was sticking up for you. Like someone already mentioned, you are a class act.

I don't see the city of Detroit, recovering anytime soon. What I see happening is something similar to St. Louis, where the main city declines but the suburbs become more important.
Auburn Hills, Southfield, Troy, Sterling Heights, Novi.... on the way up.
Detroit, Pontiac, Dearborn, Warren, Hamtramck, River Rouge.....on the way down.
If the big three collapse though, it'll be doomsday there and any recovery will take a long time.
I agree Detroit and michigan need better leaders than Granholm, Kilpatrick and Conyers.

I would be great..highly unlikely now that GM has files bankruptcy and between Chrysler and GM nearly 2000 dealerships nation wide will be closed.

I'm just curious. What is the definition of a comeback for Detroit? How will we know when it's made a comeback. What would be your top 2-3 signs its on the way back or is back?
