On Wednesday I will be going to Belle Isle, never having been there before. I have a few questions.
Is the aquarium open? I had heard that it closed down with the intent to reopen but don't know if it ever did.
Other than the conservatory is there any other building on Belle Isle that I should allow time for?
Any place to grab a bite to eat on Belle Isle?

Belle Isle is pretty run down. The Detroit Yacht Club is really nice, but I think it is members only. You may want to call and ask. I get lost every time I go out thee. Some parts are downright scary, you find yourself thinkng "this must be where bad guys go to dump bodies"

As for the aquarium -Yeah right. To put a positive light on this, the entire island is surrounded by an aquarium, just get a wetsuit and jump in.

Sorry, the acquarium closed in '67 after hungry unemployed rioters stormed the tanks and ate all the fish. They said they would open again when the local economy got better, the latest I've read is the scheduled re-opening has been tentatively set for Mid 2059 when the last resident of Detroit will have died. At that time the entire area will be a museum, including all the abandoned buildings. "Daddy what kind of people could have possibly lived in a place like this?" "Sweetie Let's just go look at the pretty fish"

Unhappy Oh how sad...

I remember going there as a little girl with my uncle and grandma. We would take a horse and buggy ride around the island, visit the Childrens' Zoo, the Aquarium and Conservatory and even bring a picnic lunch and our bathing suits and go swimming! I remember they used to have these popcorn machines, that for a dime would shoot out fresh popcorn from a silver cone shaped chute into little paper bags. That was a long time ago. Grandma and Uncle are both dead now. Guess Belle Isle is too.

The aquarium is still closed. You might check out the Belle Isle Casino and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Unfortunately, alot of stuff on Belle Isle has closed down, and the city paved over 10 acres of the park near the entrance for the Grand Prix auto racing.

OK Carmelle Here is the link to support the aquarium they are having a raffle. Sorry you didn't find my post amusing. Maybe you'll find it amusing that someone is South Texas who has never been to Belle Isle has to inform you about your city

Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium -

this site specializes on detroit - see the Belle Ilse threads

DetroitYES - Uniting the International Family of Communities surrounding the Straits of Detroit

If you ever need help and info for your area in the future don't hesitate to contact me because in 1982 I was on a train and passed through Detroit on its way to Canada and for City-data that qualifies me as an expert!

By the way I really do live on the ocean near Rockport, Texas and its rated one of the best fishing places in the country. If they don't make any progress in opening soon I'll invite you down and you can get some great fish off my pier and all the water you want- bring them back and start your own aquarium. Redfish, flounder, Sea Bass, ...jellyfish....

( Come on have a sense of humor and I hope your aquarium opens soon)

My city, far from it. I don't live in Michigan, I don't even live in the U.S. I merly said I was planning on going there. I was meeting a friend that lives in Signal Mountain Tennessee, and Detroit is a half way point for us to hook up. Belle Isle Park is an easy place to find so that was why it was selected.

A riot happened there in 1943. Most of Belle Isle is beautiful, The Grand Prix is held there. many attractions are closed but the nature zoo is still open. There are some nice places to fish, and some new and old playgrounds. The beach is polluted.

Why not meet at greenfield villiage. It is really neat. Bell Isle is not very nice. If you want to meet at a park, try Kensington. It is beautiful. If you want to have tourist fun, meet up in Hell and go canoeing. If you meet in the fall, go to Erie metropark. You can see flocks of up to 3000 hawks there in the fall. They say that there are as many as 50,000 howks int he park on any given day in the fall. If you are fishing buffs, go to Cabellas in Dundee it is the worlds largest outdoor sporting store. Ann Arbor is an execellent town to meet in. If you go int he summer, check the internet, you may want to meet in Downtwon detroit. They have some really good bands and otehr free events outside in the summer. Any of these places would be more intersting than Bell Isle. There is not much there except the Yacht club.
