Any Michiganders Relocating to North Carolina?
Hi,
I've been keeping track of what's going on in Michigan by reading the blogs. I read the Michigan newspapers daily on the Internet but find they aren't really printing the truth as to what Michigan's citizens are facing or rather enduring with the present economy. My family and I left Michigan approx. 18 months ago. Every now and then I see a car with a Michigan plate on it. Just wondering....how many of you up there are forced to leave to find some kind of economic stability for your family,...and if you're coming to North Carolina??

No one could leave if they wanted. The housing market is so bad, no one could sell their home. Most people now owe more than the house is worth.

I agree! Or most people that have been trying to leave, simply don't have the money to relocate or are having a hard time finding a job out of state.

We currently live in Metro Detroit. My husband works as an engineer in for large scale commercial construction projects. He was laid off shortly before Thanksgiving. With no money coming in, construction has come to a complete halt. We bought a house well within our income limits with a no frills, fixed rate loan five years ago. It is now worth half of what we paid for it because of all the foreclosures. Luckily my husband was able to land a new job in Richmond, VA, so that is where we are headed. In all likelihood, we will foreclose on the house and go back to renting. It's too bad that it's come to this, but we have our first baby due this summer and we're tired of trying to stay afloat on a sinking ship. I worry for our families and friends that we are leaving behind. There are vacant buildings and empty homes everywhere, and I fear that it will only get much worse.

We just moved to Durham from Hazel Park... we're renting our house out in Michigan because we wouldn't have much luck selling! The rental market rocks though. Luckily we were able to get out because my husband's job paid for the move (government rocks!). I wouldn't change a thing... I love North Carolina!

I'm taking a wait and see approach. I'm looking at North Carolina, Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta... I'm afraid to leave family, behind, and another difficult move. Its just tough, but its about time to bite the bullet

I left Michigan in Sept '07 for South Carolina and don't regret it for a minute! I love it here. Once we sold our home (taking a big hit, but at least we're done with it) my company paid for the move and my DH joined me here.
We traveled back to Michigan over the holidays and I couldn't wait to get back to SC -- not only was it too cold up there, it was just downright depressing.

My husband and I enjoyed living in Rochester Hills but it was time for something new so a little over 3 months ago we packed up our most treasured possessions and moved to San Diego. During the housing craze people really tried to push us into buying a house. Ya know, the "everybody is doing it" mentality. Anyway, it was bad enough trying to sell our used manufactured home but we managed to get rid of it at the end of July for a little less than what we bought it for 3 years earlier. That was fine with us, the thought of going through another winter was just too much! Little did we know how harsh the winter was going to be in Michigan this year. Looks like we got out just in time, and we haven't looked back! We absolutely love it here in SD and enjoy every bit of the glorious sunshine.
Incidentally, we actually considered NC/SC first. We even took a road trip out there a couple years ago to scope it out. In the end we decided against it because we had spent too much time in the east and wanted something completely new and different. It's definitely a great option for some people though!

There are a lot leaving and wanting to leave. I have a friend that move to N. Carolina about 25 years ago. I have been seriously contemplating it myself.
Too much urban sprawl now though. The ppl moving there are the ones I'm trying to avoid......

How do you like living in North Carolina? What part did you move to. We are relocating to Chapel Hill in July! We are scared but SOOOO excited. Our friends live there and say they would never come back. They said you don't realize how depressing it is until you leave it. What's your take on the move?
Thanks!
