This is going to sound crazy; but are you the person who came and looked at my house last week in Riley Township Michigan? I have a log house.

All this talk about moving to the Warren area and no mentions Warren? I've noticed reading this forum you have to stay out by Hall Rd, The Gross Pointes, or Plymouth/Canton. Warren is a perfectly fine city. Just stay away from 8 Mile. Anywhere between 11 Mile and 14 Mile is a good area. Warren Woods, Warren Consolidated and Center Line Schools are all good schools. Take a look at some of the neighborhoods by 12 Mile and Hoover over towards Schoenherr and on up to 14 mile, or Loirrane between 12 and 13 mile and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Lots of well kept brick ranches and friendly neighborhoods. The bad parts of Warren are along and south of 9 Mile. Stay away from Fitzgerald and Van Dyke schools.

The commute from the Ann Arbor 'burbs to Warren would be ungodly! There are plenty of nice areas on the NW end of Detroit -- Lake Orion, Auburn Hills, Grosse Pointe Woods, Shelby Township, Harper Woods, St. Clair Shores -- that are not too snobbular and decently priced. Just be aware that the closer you get to the lake, the higher the real-estate prices and the snobbier the neighbors. Warren itself is pretty down at the heel, but not a scary place to live by any means.

What do you mean "down at the heel"

Also, Harper Woods no longer fits in with the other communities you listed. Maybe 10 years ago, but not now. The city has slowly declined. Not a bad place by any means, but the city of Detroit has completely fallen off around Harper Woods and that is creeping into Harper Woods.

The neighborhoods I mentioned in Warren are safer and just as nice as Harper Woods. They do cost a little more however.

I would agree that Harper Woods is not a good choice nowadays. It's no slum, but it's trending that way.

Warren south of the freeway is pretty bad nowadays. I would not buy there.

North of the freeway is fine, but is very blue collar feeling. If that's cool with you, then I think it's a good choice. Just keep north of the freeway.

The people who live in Harper Woods are good people. It's the filth that surrounds the city. Most of the theft and robberies happen at Eastland. I advise not going there after dark. If you're between Harper and Mack that is still a nice area and in Grosse Pointe schools. The city is still will kept up and the police are pretty good.

What exactly is blue collar feeling?
