To tell you the truth, some of these neighborhoods are so abandoned and depressed, hardly anybody is around, and most likely, nobody is going to pay you any attention, other than a curious or quizzical facial expression. In the day time, you'll be alright. Even at night you'll probably be fine.
A staple of downtown, the Anchor bar, is located near the Joe Louis Arena on Fort Street. Check it out. Also, a renovated historic 1916-built high-rise hotel opened just a couple blocks from the Joe Louis Arena. It is called the Doubletree Fort Shelby.

I can tell right now you guys are gonna stick out like a sore thumb. There have been atleast 12 men 8 women and 3 infants executed right on 8 mile within the past week.. Only if they would have had rabbit with them.. Ahhh I was young once, trust me Eminem didn't live the 8 mile life as seen in the movies, its hype.

Besides the time I went to Burnette Street to visit my Great grandmother and went to the nearby Church's Chicken with the bulletproof partition, I really have never felt scared in Detroit. I even had a girlfriend that was White with me at the time too. This was back in 1994, btw. No big deal. Just like any city of any size, just mind your business and you'll usually be fine.

Meaning you can't go at a gas station. They won't let you. You can't go at a restaurant, they're mostly of the variety with the "pass your food through the bomb-proof lexan window where only one door can be opened at a time" type. You can't go at the police station because there won't be any toilet paper in there.....
So, it's really not "just like any city". If you gotta go, you'll have to go in the alley, wino-style. Bring TP!
