Move to Oakland County, where you won't have to expose your children to the horrors of Detroit. There are plenty of walkable cities in Oakland County with similar architecture and homes as Grosse Pointe.

Look at Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, parts of Royal Oak, and Birmingham (if you can afford Birmingham).

Now GPP is still nice and relatively safe, but it is getting worse, and the blight will eventually cross the city limits (as it has in Harper Woods, Eastpointe, and, more recently, GP Woods).
The children will be FINE in Grosse Pointe Park. They have an EXCELLENT police department and the savages across Alter know not to mess with em.

At first glance my brain said "uh-oh that's the wrong thing to say" but then I realized I lived on Wayburn (the Detroit side) for two years and I really can't argue with how you said that.
