Default How well does Gran Torino portray Highland Park?

I'm sure many of you have seen this. If you haven't you need too, it's a great movie, and it was filmed and based in Detroit. I noticed towards the end of the movie the cop car said Highland Park on it, so it made me wonder if this movie is accurate to everyday life in HP?

I can't speak from personal experience as I have never been to Highland Park, but the film made it seem that he lived in a primarily Asian neighborhood. According to the 2000 census, HP is only 0.24% Asian, so I doubt such a neighborhood exists there.

Where Eastwood lived was in Highland Park. Where the gang-bangers lived is Highland Park as well, but a bad area. Crime rates are higher than Detroit. Actual HP cops played in the movie too, including the chief. THe final scenic scene at the end was Grosse Pointe Farms along Lakeshore Drive.

No the movie really does not portray the city very well, there are no Asian neighborhoods at all. But one thing that is true, is that it is a very poor old and run down city (at least most of it).

The movie was based on a city in minnesota or somwhere where they have a mung (or whatever the name is) gang problem. It was relocated to Detroit due to the tax rebates. So it is displaying a problem tha tis in anotuher city, but located in Detroit.

Detroit has gang problems, but not this type.

Minneapolis and more so, St. Paul in Minnesota have relatively big Hmong communities. They are a Southeast Asian group that are from the mountainous parts of that region. So, it was probably based on experiences in the Twin Cities area.

Incorrect, they DO have their own police force.

For a little while they did not though, I believe that they were controlled by state police 2001-2002, when Highland Park went bankrupt.

The movie was supposed to be shot in Minnesota. They moved here for the $$$.
