That might be the case today, but I grew up in the D in the 80s...this was when the rivalry between Detroit and Chicago gangs were nasty...Chi town cats was not appreciate in Detroit and vice versa...and if you came into each other town, you better had been low key.
I'm surprise that GDs are in Detroit now tho...I can see Latin Counts/Latin Kings (since Hispanics groups are more close-knitted at times) ...I live about two hours from Memphis now though, and Memphis is like GD Central for the South USA. ..but that for a different thread though.

Although Detroit is often the "murder capitol" of the country, gang banging has never been a big issue in the city, except for on the southwest side. Sure, there a bloods and crips vicelords,G.D's, etc. scattered throughout the east and west sides, as well as neighborhood cliques from just about every other block, but you very rarely see these groups "beefing" with each other unless it's just a chance encounter. Most shootings in Detroit are money motivated, usually drugs or robberies, followed by love triangles and drunken stupidness. The drug trade put way too many guns on the streets and unfortunately people use them to settle a large array of issues, just not usually gang related. Now southwest Detroit is different, that's where most of the hispanics and also a lot of white kids live and they've had gangs there for a while, back when I used to hang out there, it was mostly the Latin Counts and Spanish Cobras out of Chicago fighting with each other or with the Cash Flows, a homegrown Detroit gang. There were other gangs around back then (90-91), but those were the main ones. Now there's surenos out there too as well as a few new ones, but for the most part gang related violence is mostly limited to this area.

All of the "Official" gangs are in Delray.
I know that there is a set of Bloods in my moms old neighborhood. Off of Moross road. The 7 mile bloods. Detroit has 3 mafia families. The Zerilli, Tocco, and Licavoli families. That's about all I know of.

Driving around the city you will see a lot of graffiti mostly the local guys claiming their territory and mostly their streets. You will see some bloods, piru, cripz, GD's, and other random gang signs throughout the city.
Although there is a lot of violence in the city it doesn't seem as gang oriented as other cities. I think its because there is a vast amount of unwanted land and no reason to fight over it. That's just my guess from hanging out in the city selling houses.

I would agree with this poster and ask where the information in that other thread got its figures. Gangs are really not at the ridiculous level here that they have reached in places like L.A., but they definitely exist. I hope they don't catch on any more than they have already -- all we need is a frikkin' series of gang wars on top of the other problems.
To the poster who thinks Detroit sounds like hell on earth: really, it's a nice city with lots of personality and about the same amount of crime as any other place the same size. But Detroit has been wearing a kind of hair shirt ever since we won the "Murder Capital Of The World" crown in 1977. People only want to see, and focus on, the negatives. Not that they aren't pretty considerable at the moment. My boss announced today that as of last year, 78% of all the auto-making jobs were gone for good. But most people are pretty much making it, one way or another.

But the OP said fewer gang members per capita.
My thought is that gangs are far from the only source of crime in this world. There are plenty of welfare chiselers, drug dealers, hookers, burglars, carjackers and miscellaneous lowlife who have absolutely nothing to do with gangs.

Reading this thread because I want to find a city comparable to Richmond, VA. Does Detroit come close?
