With Detroits crime why would Michigans gang ranking be low
I hope this question doesn't offend anyone, but I was looking at another thread, about which states have the highest gang members per capita.
But why with Detroit crime ranking being worse than most large cities, and with bleak employment prospects, why would Illinois have more gang members per capita than Michigan?

Detroit have gangs, but it's mostly neighborhood cliques. They don't have the the type of gangs that you'll find in L.A. or Chicago, but that's not to say that they are no less violent or dangerous than gangs from those cities. In the 80's til' the late 90's Detroit had a lot of gang related slayings on the eastside and southwest, but now it's mostly due to drug gangs and dispute over drug territory....the street gangs are still active, though not as much as it used to be.

Because most Detroit thugs are too STUPID to be able organize into a unit.
Therefore, independent operators.
We did, as previous poster stated, have a more significant gang problem in the late 70's early 80's. DPD gang units did quite a bit of work to put things in check, and as it turns out they did make a big difference. No more YBI [Young Boys Incorporated], etc. Much of the crime here is economy related (independent robbers, carjackers, domestic violence, independent drug dealers, etc), not gang related. With that said, we do, however, have gangs - particularly in southwest Detroit - and unfortunately recent indications are that they are somewhat on the rise.

Everytime I read the detroit forum on here I say to myself "this place sounds like HELL ON EARTH."
My friend just moved back home to detroit to help his sick parents...and I guess he is now counted among the 10% that have a college degree...but I remember him saying he lived a rough life growing up and I didn't really take it seriously...like how bad could it be, right? I don't think I believed half the stuff he told me, sounded...like a good movie...
Now I read here and even though he knows half the martial arts known to man and can kick anybody's a** with ease, not to mention is licensed to carry concealed weapon...I get nervous for him...like...why would he ever be caught dead back there...it sounds...like a nightmare.
Is there nothing good happening for Detroit right now? I see threads on the glory days of the past...but even with high unemployment the vast majority are working, right? What's going on good for them?

Uhhhhh….what caused the decrease in the IQ of criminals from the 70’s to today in Detroit, given that you say Detroit thugs are too stupid to form organized gangs, although in the 70’s there was more of a gang problem? Thanks for the intellectual stimulation. To the person who suggested it was because other cities are larger……per capita (usually per a certain number of people…ie….number of gang members per 10,000 people) renders the discrepancies in size irrelevant.
The big difference between Detroit and other cities is Drug dealing, in my opinion. Detroit probably has some of the most prolific drug dealers in the nation. The Black Mafia Family (BMF) was started by a couple of Detroit brothers who moved south and to the West Coast. I live here in Minneapolis after moving from Detroit. When Detroit drug dealers started coming to this city in the 90’s (they were called the Detroit boyz by locals….even though it was unconnected groups simply coming here selling) the Police chief at that time said that the Detroiters were by far the most violent problem in the city. That is notwithstanding the fact that Vice Lords and Gangster Disciples from Chicago were moving in too, as well as some LA gangs. That is when Minneapolis had its record years in homicide. I could tell when a murder was Detroiters sometime....because on the news they would say that people were bound with duck tape or that the home was taken over by dealers....which was an MO when I left Detroit.
Detroit hoods are about making money, wearing nice cloths, driving nice cars, having plenty of women. Youth could do that via drug dealing and hooking up with drug cliques more than they could gang banging over colors and non money beefs. Now what you are finding across the country is that Street gangs are heavily into drug dealing. Detroit is a drug dealing city…..not a gang banging city. Competition for drug territory is more violent. All one has to do is look at the era of prohibition and the violence associated with it. Detroit’s “Purple Gang” would be a good example of that

My statement wasn't "literal".... just tongue-in-cheek.
There are a number of factors that affect the confluence of mechanisms in place such as gangs, or the lack thereof. As it turns out, one of those factors is "natural cycle order". Right now, we don't have a lot of gangs in Detroit, and therefore young kids don't see it, and as such they don't emulate it. It's not much different than wearing afros - if you're not seeing it, it's not vogue, and not a lot of folk emulate it. Low-riders (cars)? Detroit is 'the' car town, yet we don't have many low-riders like in LA. Why? It's just not something that naturally caught on here... and since young folks don't see it as much as LA, they don't emulate it. What they "have" seen is expensive rims - therefore theY "do" emulate that and you do see a lot of expensive rims on cars. I digress.
Just like other trends and styles that exist in "natural cycles", unfortunately gangs will return. According to some recent stats, they already are on the uptick.
Just for kicks (pardon the pun), here's a little video info on gangs and crime in Detroit:
DETROIT - MURDER CITY - From the Purple Gang to the Y.B.I. and more.

Drive around southwest Detroit, there are plenty of "real gangs" around. Maybe the reason other cities have more gang bangers is because they're nice places to live with more opportunities for gangery. Maybe they don't like Detroit because everything to steal has already been stolen!
Gangsters have standards too you know.

You for the win.
This is the truth. I grew up in Detroit during the 1980s and 1990s. Most of the violence was 1) drug-related, 2) acquaintance, or 3) crossfire.
