Why would Detroit want to let suburban kids into Renaissance? With the dearth of decent (let alone very good) schools in Detroit, I think there are plenty of Detroiters to fill seats at Renaissance. Higher class sizes to let suburban kids into Renaissance? I'd be pretty hot if I was a Detroit parent with a kid at Renaissance and saw that happening. Why not make Seaholm or Grosse Pointe West "schools of choice" and start sending Detroit kids from Cody there?
The DPS does very few things right. To allow suburbanites to take advantage of a very rare desirable Detroit resource in that situation would not be a good idea in my opinion.
Perhaps what DPS could do is set a limit to the number of slots.
If there are leftover slots after all of the qualified DPS applicants are let in, suburbanites could take the leftover number of slots.

So how bad ARE the property taxes in PW? Anyone? There are a few houses that are exceedingly cheap ($60-70k), and then the rest for sale right now look to be from about $250k-$600k+... what makes the difference? Just upkeep? Or do the really cheap "bank-owned" homes just probably have extreme repair needs or major back taxes?
Well, I figured out if I google some of the properties for sale, I can find them on zillow/trulia and most show the taxes... everything I found is between $9k and $15k a year! Good lord is that out of control! I think I paid less than $2k last year here in Scottsdale on a house that's appraising right around $250k... and I can actually send my kids to our local public schools...
Still wondering on the question below: anyone who has actually lived in a PW home on here?

Thanks for the responses so far!!
you might have answered your own question. chances are highly unlikely you will find many people that live there. it's a small area, sorrounded by a large bad area with really high taxes.

Renaissance is one of the top public high schools in Michigan. It is an execelent school. Your kids have to be very bright to get in. We visited when my daughter was job shadowing a teacher there. The kids were very polite and respectful. It seemd an ideal high school atmosphere. People in the suburbs would probably be very surprised to learn that Rennassaince is a more highly rated school than their high end suburb high school. There are very few schools above rennasaince on the high school rankings list.
Ok more specifically - how about the area along Balmoral close to Woodard? a few blocks west of Woodard?
How does Palmer Woods compare with Indian Village for safety?
The address in Palmer Woods seems to be Highland Park and you know the old saying "people in the suburbs are afraid of Detroit, people in Detroit are afraid of Highland Park.
opinions?
Palmer Woods still has it's own security team, and I don't think Indian Village does, so I would say Palmer Woods is safer.
