Don't forget... other cities have the ability to annex to increase their tax base. This is why they had the money to fund efforts to improve their city core. Detroit is not allowed to annex, so it can't force the suburbs to pay for city improvement.

Suburbs are paying for the ZOO and the DIA i think?

There is a hotel tax that benefits Detroit I believe.

And I also think there are 1 or 2 other "surcharges" state wide that assist Detroit as well...

And who would be the first burb to ALLOW annexation??

Dearborn?
Ecorse?

and the city is land locked on the north by EMEMIN AVE, aka 8 MILE,

Another solution that requires NOTHING of Detroit other than dominating others and intimidation to

"DO IT DETROIT'S WAY OR YOUR A RACIST"

The city needs to take RESPONSIBILITY for the mess it has created on its OWN and fix said mess on its OWN..

What happened to CASINOS being the SAVIOR of Detroit?

how's that workin' for ya?

We need to get someone who records all of the addresses and personal details about city council members. We need to hack their computers, tap their phones, get the mafia involved, etc.

So when a council member opens his or her mouth about how trying to fix the city is racist or how evil Whitey is, or starts a fight, ad nauseum, any one of the following can happen:
* Embarrassing info about sexual relations comes out
* The person's loans fail and his or her house, automobile, etc are taken away
* The person is arrested for a crime committed
* The person's house is ransacked by copper thieves

In all, the council will realize that they have to behave, or else they will be ruined as people.

WHO'S the mayor in these cities today?

SAME old school cronies?

MARION BERRY....ROFLMAO
Philadelphias mayor Michael Nutter who happens to be african american is very articulate and progressive. Philadlephias downfall over the years has been the moblike, cronyish, union white trash who held the city back.

That being said Center City Philly and its surrounding neighborhoods have seen over $13 B dollars worth of private investment in the past few years. Philadephia certainly has its areas of demise but it would be a great example/guide/ray of hope for Detroit to follow.

Its a long journey and it will probably be longer for Detroit than Philly (who is better stategically located) but things can turnaround with the right leadership.

Default New to the area and leaving

We have been here less than a year and can say "we gave it a shot". The first few months here we constantly heard "why did you move up here?". Now, my answer can only be out of sheer stupidity. One of those young and dumb mistakes. It is just too depressing (not to mention--cold) to stay here...spouse can't find a job and the state is not paying unemployment.

We are going back to Texas...

The terrible economy is not my fault, the social/racial backwardness is not my fault, the terrible roads are not my fault, the lack of viable transit is not my fault, etc. So I'm not going to put up with it.
But think how meaningful it is to make a difference in that kind of longstanding mess. Saying "I'm just another rat deserting the sinking ship" is popular lately, but not half as good as "I helped fix DETROIT, baby. Tomorrow I start on the Russian economy."

Peolpe are leaving Detroit and all the rest of Michigan because there is no work. My husband and I were life long residents with both of our parents being life long residents and so on and so on. We are very upset with what is going on in Michigan...but we had to leave. If we had stayed, we would have been homeless and would be currently facing starvation. Michigan and the Detroit area will eventually rebound. All things are cyclical. Until things get better...more and more Michigan residents will have to leave to find employment elsewhere. How can it be expected that everyone stay?? There are too many Michigan residents on unemployment and welfare assistance now. Its a wonder that the entire state hasn't financially collapsed.
Excellent Post!
Every time I log in on the Detroit thread there is always someone on here implying people that leave are traitors. I too lived in Michigan all my life. All my family is there. But after 8 years of struggling, several job losses and then my husband's company on the brink, we chose to leave. We TRIED TO MAKE IT WORK. Was I supposed to end up homeless and starve to death for the sake of Michigan? We also rent out our house. Its basically pointless as I have had 3 renters in just a year span. Every time I get someone in the house, they lose their job. I go home and it depresses me. The street my old house is on is filled with foreclosures. Some are shells as they have been stripped of all the plumbing. I figure in about 3 more yrs my home will be completely worthless. I am already 50k in the hole with it. We left and are doing quite well. I no longer eat 5 dollar pizzas cuss that was in our food budget. I can pay my bills on time, no more bill collectors and I own a lovely home with property taxes of 1100 a year verses the 3500 I was paying back in MI. I really hope Michigan does a turn around but I dont see it for quite a while. I fear for my family and what might happen with them as almost half of my family is unemployed right now.

Check this out. I moved from northern Michigan to Arizona (Phoenix) four years ago. My parents and sister and niece are still back in East Lansing. My sis lost her job last June and is still getting unemployment. I am trying to get them to move out here but they all REFUSE. Know why? Because she would rather stay in Michigan and rot and get unemployment when she can actaully find a job in another state and get on with her life. I told her she should get out now with everyone else. But no! How much loyalty must a person have? Until they are literally starving to death and homeless? Am i the one that's insane?
