Westland
I am currently looking for a house. I work in Ann Arbor and go to school in Ypsilanti so I want to stay within 40 min or so of there. I can't afford Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti is too trashy overall for my liking.
What does anyone know about Westland? Is it is a good area? What are the good and bad areas of Westland? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Plymouth or Canton are better choices. Westland is not bad, some parts are a bit rough, but it is generally ok. Livona is worth looking into as well. Ypsi township is mostly rural, but has some decent apartments.
Are you going to Eastern?

Yeah I agree I like Plymouth or Canton much better. I guess I should have clarified I am looking to buy a house not rent a house or an apartment.
Livonia is an area I am looking into as well. I am looking to buy a house probably for no more than 70,000. I know that definitely limits my options which is why places like Canton, Plymouth, and Ann Arbor are out of the question unless I wanted a condo which I don't.
Coldjensens, do you know the bad areas of Westland and what to avoid? I have seen a few ranch style houses online going in my price range that look pretty nice. I just dont know what the area is like. I am going to drive over there tomorrow and check it out but any other advice would be helpful!

What about Belleville or the communities in that part of Wayne County?

I'm distressed to read that about my hometown. I didn't see these rough areas when I last visited in 2007. Where exactly are they?

There are some nice areas in the northern part of Westland and even some newer subs, that are in the Livonia school district/Churchill High School. If I were considering Westland, that would be the only area.

Why? Because they are nicer? Nothing wrong with that. Soomebody said that parts of Westland were a bit rough. Are you saying everything except that part is rough? I'm not here to argue. I just want to understand where people are getting this impression about Westland from. I grew up there. What has happened to cause this perception?

I don't know about the rest of Westland, but it's pretty obvious that Livonia schools are better than Wayne Westland Schools. That's enough for me right there. Look at the stats for Churchill compared to John Glenn.

It appears to me that in general, the nicer areas are on the Western side of Westland and the rougher areas are on the Eastern side of Westland. I cannot help much with specific streets, I have been in some areas where I check to make sure my doors are locked and others that are very nice and quite similar to parts of Livonia. As you drive around Westland, the nicer areas and less nice areas are obvious.

Growing up there, the bad part was always the Southeast part. (near Inkster). The parts near Garden city were nice.
