I've never been to Cleveland, but I can tell you that Detroit is like Cleveland sportswise - they have great basketball teams!
I have been to Detroit a few times though. So maybe if I tell you what it's like in Detroit, you can compare it to Cleveland. Please keep in mind, though, that I haven't been to EVERY part of the city. When I do go, its pretty much in or around the same area.
Overall, wherever I went, I felt safe. However, when I do go to Detroit, its during the day. There were many "boxed houses", as I call them, right next to perfectly livable houses. Along with boxed houses, there were BURNED houses, just sitting there. Theres are picture of a few on the Detroit page on city-data.com. But anyways, there was a lot of trash in the streets. Some rude drivers here and there. Many streets need to be rebuilt, and the condemned houses torn down. I haven't been downtown before, so I can't really tell you much about that.
Please know there are good parts of the city (that I haven't seen yet), and a few good schools in those parts. It's very segregated, so basically everything the Civil Rights Movement was for sort of just skipped the Detroit region. There's not really much INSIDE the city (again, I haven't been to all parts of the city) shoppingwise. I think Detroit is the largest metro area where the city center has a LOWER GMP than the suburbs (meaning, the suburbs generate more money than the city itself).
Hope this helps your comparison.

Clevelanders dry slow, you can't get a good coney island hot dog, and there is too much lake effect snow. Not only can you drive faster, eat well, and live without swimming in snow, but in Detroit ... you can have more urban blight (in absolute quantitative terms).
Detroit > Cleveland

The joke I've always heard:
What's the definition of Detroit?
Cleveland without all the glitter!

yes and no...
I attended Kent State University and have gained several friends from Cleveland but I am from Michigan, Pontiac which is a suburb of Detroit. When I came back from Ohio I moved to Detroit for a little over 2yrs. Did alot of partying and concerts, etc. in Cleveland. That joke about Cleveland is Detroit without the glitter is so true. The economy is the same, the pits!!! Not only do you not get a good coney dog in Cleveland (those polish boys are so nasty, who created that?!?!!?) but the fashion and music is slow as ever. Seems like Cleveland is so close but so slow. As far as the econcomy, housing, crime and the most important things in life, they are exactly the same. I've hung out on the East side of Cleveland and yes it is bad, but being in Detroit I didnt feel uncomfortable at all. If you watch your surroundings and mind your own business in most cases you will be fine. And that goes for most major cities you go to.

Try to tell me that Cleveland people don't drive slower ... because they do.
Can't get a good coney dog OR Chicago style pizza here in Champaign, Illinois. That's why Ann Arbor is the best place in the world.
Akron area isn't terrible, but Stow/Kent is terribly boring, Hudson snobby, Fairlawn is sprawlburbia. Cleveland suburbs aren't any better, although there is wide variation (inland versus lake, westside versus eastside, etc).
Kent State University > Eastern Michigan University?
I knew people in Akron who went to EMU and then went back to Ohio for work.

Basically everybody's right, Cleveland is Detroit in miniature, with more snow.
The only other difference is probably political -- in the Detroit area people hate Detroit or they hate the suburbs.

Believe me Cleveland is much better than Detroit! you might have some of the same issues, but I know you are much cleaner than Detroit is.
