Default Major retailers are leaving Detroit.

I just found this out a moment ago. Major retailers in Detroit are headed out of there. This is getting scary. Detroit has been on the decline for decades, starting with the layoffs from GM and Ford. Now things are getting worse. Detroit must work out a plan to revamp itself.
Article:retailers-head-for-exits-in-detroit.html: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

My view: Jobs, things, people are leaving. Something needs to be done to create new businesses from the inside out.

Even Chipotle, a fast food chain, has no locations within city limits:

There are many others of course. That is just a sampling.

ladyblue09 is on a distinguished road
This isn't really new. There haven't been any major grocery stores in the city limits for many years. Starbucks had to scale back and close down a lot of its stores (nationwide) a few years ago. Borders is also having problems nationwide that will likely lead to widespread store closures.
I think the article is sensationalizing things.
Detroit is bad off, but the lack of a grocery store is not evidence of things getting worse.
(Also, Chipotle only opened up a location in my neck of the woods about two years ago, so it's not too surprising they have no Detroit location yet).

I remember when it was big news that Detroit was getting a Farmer Jacks after decades without a major grocery chain.

It's hard on someone like me who wants Detroit to thrive but struggles to imagine myself living in a city of 900,000 people that can't even support a book store.

The Borders in downtown Detroit wasn't even a full-size store. It was only about 8000 square feet, roughly 1/3 the size of an average Borders store. And even it eventually closed.

Speaking of Farmer Jack, I found some goodies.

In 1998: Wayne County Store Locations

Farmer Jack had these Detroit stores:
* 9800 East 8 Mile
* 2411 Central
* 700 Chene
* 9731 Harper
* 19195 Livernois
* 8000 West Outer Drive
* 20361 Plymouth
* 8665 Rosa Park Boulevard
* 500 East Warren

It also had:
* Hamtramck: 9023 Joseph Campau
* Highland Park: 14100 Woodward (Model T Plaza)

By June 2001: Wayne County Store Locations

In Detroit:
* One new store, 19150 Telegraph was open
* Chene, Livernois, West Outer, Rosa Parks, and Warren remained open
* East 8 Mile, Central, Harper, and Plymouth had closed

Hamtramck and Highland Park remained open.

This is why I say new businesses need to be created.
