Another Reason To Encourage Kids To Study Hard Enough To Avoid Summer School: 7 Teens Shot At Bus Stop In Warrendale
I believe this was in one of the "nice" neighborhoods?

Seven teens shot in Detroit
Summer school students, two others wounded; motive unclear
George Hunter, Oralandar Brand-Williams and Mark Hicks / The Detroit News
Detroit -- Tuesday started out normally for Steve Hakim, owner of the B&B Shell gas station on the city's west side. When he saw two youths run across his lot, their shirts pulled over their heads, he thought it was the normal hijinks schoolchildren often engage in around his station.
Then came the bloodshed.
"I saw the whole thing," said Hakim, 49, of Farmington Hills. "Two kids ran across the lot toward a bunch of other kids who were at the bus stop (outside his station), then they started shooting at them. They just collapsed, fell down. It was pretty scary."

The shooting has nothing to do with summer school. That shooting is indicative of Detroit's violent crime issues.

Warrendale is horrible nowadays.
It was never really a nice neighborhood, but it was ok until about 1995.
Even when it was a white neighborhood, it was poor and trashy.

I lived there in the 80's and I thought it was a nice area from south of Tireman to city limits. Every house on my block was well-maintained, lawns were cut, shrubs trimmed and successful small businesses were abundant on Warren Ave. with owners who lived in the area.

Did you know that some students attend summer school to earn extra credits so that they can participate in other extracurricular activities or even graduate early? That is a positive reason to attend summer school.

So true. One of my boys is going to Summer school right now because he wanted to, not because he had to. There are a lot of them that go because they actually like school and want to stay a step ahead in school and not get bored all Summer.

At Cody? How many? What proportion? What type of other extracurricular activies in the Detroit Public School system require students who get passing grades during the regular school year to obtain extra credits in summer school to participate?

Don't get bent out of shape. Read the headlines, it really doesn't matter what school/neighborhood you live in...violence is everywhere. My point was that summer school is not all negative, there are positive reasons for attending.

You are right. Seven kids are shot outside a school every day in America. Maybe in YOUR neighborhood, not mine.
That is one of the reasons I moved out of the Detroit area after two years at the DMC was that the most outrageous behavior was met with an indifferent attitude.
