Default "Whitest Neighborhoods" thread.....

I don't think the OP meant anything negative about it. I think it has more to do with the fact that Detroit overall demographics being the way they are and that there are still neighborhoods of different makeups in the city of Detroit that they wouldn't know about otherwise. I was actually surprised about the makeup of some of the neighborhoods that were mentioned and I think people have this overall view of Detroit just being one way and it's generally viewed in a negative or stereotypical light.

I don't know why everyone took that thread so wrong.
You get thrashed by someone for every little thing on this forum.
And In a way, the thread was made to disprove stereotypes.

I think anytime someone brings up race, it's automatically a polarizing issue, no matter what the intent. I don't know what you mean by "stereotype." The words that probably first come to peoples' mind about Detroit are "crime" GM" "unemployment" "black" "cars" "Motown"....all pretty valid.

I don't know that it's surprising though....so the city of Detroit as a whole is, what, over 80% black? And the white/other people comprise 20%, well I suppose they have to live somewhere, so they cluster in Italian/Polish/law school/Arab/Greek/gay enclaves and neighborhoods. It's what people do. There's Chinatowns and Little Italies and Greektowns etc in cities all over the world. We're organized pack animals, like wolves or dogs. A few cities are much better about being ethnically and socially "blended" but Detroit, unfortunately, isn't one of them.

Frankly, I didn't understand why the moderator closed the thread. I gave the OP the chance to clarify his post before everyone jumped on him/her, and I believed the OP when they said they were simply pointing out the lack of diversity. The reality is that we live in one of the most segregated places in the country. I would have liked to continue the discussion.

I tried to post a reply regarding ethnic "towns", but it was blocked when the post was closed.

We really don't take advantage of all of the ethnicity in this area (God that sounded horrible). I would love to have, in addition to Greektown and Mexicantown, a Little Arabia, Little India, etc. all within close proximity to downtown. Places like that are major attractions, provide employment to immigrants and allow immigrants the ability to ease into a new country and culture.

I'll probably dream this idea to my death, along with light rail. Hmph.

I also think the OP was trying to show that in spite of Detroit being 81% Black, that there are neighborhoods with good amounts of White residents. I think people automatically think that every neighborhood in Detroit is completely or overwhelmingly Black, but like the OP and myself have shown, that isn't completely true. So, I saw it as a way to show that Detroit has neighborhoods for everyone, in spite of it's demographics.

I'm actually surprised that the people that jumped over the previous thread aren't doing the same to this one.
