PORT HURON - Is there a FUTURE there????
Hello everybody! I am in desperate need of "local advice" and wise and honest facts about moving to Port Huron. Next week I am planning to purchase a quadruplex in the area south of the Black river, very close to Mlitary road, just south of the 10th st bridge from St.Clair county community college. Please advise me if this IS a healthy neighbourhood to live in. It is a lifetime savings that I am about to invest, the reason being is that I am completely priced out of the market in St.Paul, Minnesota. This is my last resort to escape the vicious cycle of paying rent and being deprived of homeownership. IS THERE A FUTURE in living and starting a small business such as a gas station or a liquor store in Port Huron? I am aware that it is a small town with 33,000 residents, but I like the fact that it is located right across the bridge from Sarnia, ON. Please see if you could write some honest feedback, I would be gracefully thankful.

I haven't lived in Port Huron for a while, but would gladly do so if I had a steady job there. It has grown over the years, but is very safe almost anywhere.

Check out the local newspaper, The Port Huron Times Herald.
Visit the fourms, lots of locals there to give advise.
I wouldn't consider anything south of Water Street.

I'm not very good at this, but I will give it a try.
Go to the Herald home page then scroll down to Hot Topics on the left side of the page then click on More Forum Topics. Click on Local News or any of the other topics. Hopefully that will get you to all the local people. The locals there are nice people they will tell it like it is.
Post again if my directions don't get you there.

I grew up in the area.
Hmm...a gas station in Port Huron...pretty ideal. They certainly exist already. But more and more US/Canada traffic is choosing going through Port Huron than through Detroit...meaning more and more traffic.
For other things, Port Huron doesn't seem so bright - I mean, it is a very simplistic basic small city. It isn't attracting artists, or interesting things whatsoever. But for what it is, it is fine.
For someone wanting to start up a gas station as a goal - Port Huron is ideal. Not only that, but very few if any alternative transportation of any other kind - very car-dependent place.

Port Huron has a great development in the planning phase for the old rail tracks along the river. Downtown will expand out and could be quite a destination space. There already is a spot for folks to sit and watch the tankers go by while you sip on coffee, there is a museum I belive in the works for kids. lots of neat stuff there, I wish i was in Michigan to enjoy it!
beautiful city! and while Sarnia is not the best to look at I still think it is interesting in a industrial sense and the wind usually blows into Canada so the pollution stays on their side...

I live in Port Huron and I love the city.....expecially in the summer time. You can't find a better place in the world to be out in a boat on a nice day in July or August than Port Huron.
I would recommend looking towards the north end of town. The area you're talking about isn't bad, because it is close to downtown. However, with the current downfall in prices, the first area to bounce back will be the north end. If you spend money there, you're more likely to make a profit when the housing market comes back. As far as a gas station, I would look into the current construction plans for the new bridge plaza to be built between 2010 and 2015. If you can find where bridge traffic will be routed and find a close place to put a gas station, you'll make a fortune. Be careful about anything near the bridge that looks like too good of a deal to be true - it probably is too good to be true, because it is probably in an area that is slated to be demolished for the new plaza.
