Default Which Rush Hour Commute Into Detroit is Worse...

would it be I-75 from roughly Monroe to Dearborn, or I-94 from Ann Arbor to Dearborn? Our son is planning on attending U of M Dearborn and he is worried about the commute time and distance, as we have to stay somewhat close to Toledo, where we have rental property. We are planning on settling in Dundee, but would like your opinions on which commute is worse, just in case we end up in Erie or Monroe.

Thanks!

I would assume I-75 would be much worse... I'd choose I-94 in a heartbeat.

I know, it seems like there would be a lot more commuters on the main route from Toledo and Monroe than on the main route from Ann Arbor and other points west, since the population in Toledo and Monroe is larger. Our son would be taking 23 from Dundee to Ann Arbor, which is a piece of cake, and then 94 over to Dearborn, which is the part that he is worried about. Someone told him that it would take up to 2 1/2 hrs. during peak hours, which I find a bit hard to believe, but I could be wrong. I hope not!

The commute from 75 heading north is a breeze. Traffic moves fine even during rush hour. You would exit on Southfield Rd and head north which becomes Southfield Fwy. Then exit at Michigan Ave, which takes you to Evergreen, where UM-D is located, depending on how far south on 75 you move I'd factor 40-50 minute drive time (once on 75). There is much more population west of Detroit than South. There is much more commerce heading north, but the trucks are prohibited from using the left lane. I can't speak for 94, but most of the interstates tend to flow very well in Detroit (save some exceptions north of the city). I don't think either commute will be bad, certainly not 2.5 hours. Either commute is very do-able and shouldn't preclude you from buying what suits your needs best.
