Hi, csue! My spouse is also scheduled to move with the BRAC realignment of TACOM/Rock Island to Warren. I have learned so much about the metro Detroit area from reading this forum. It is overwhelming at first, but grab GoogleMaps and dive on in! I wish I knew anything to tell you about Harper Woods, but so far, I don't. Hopefully, someone from the area will post for you soon.
One thing that I have realized while reading here is that at Rock Island "Warren" and "Detroit" are almost used interchangeably. We here at Rock Island are hardly aware of the rest of the metro area at all. What little many of us "know" we have absorbed from the national media, so many of us are worried that we're being sent to an anarchic, bombed-out moonscape where we'll be in fear of our lives. Certainly, parts of Detroit proper sound like no bed of roses - but painting the entire area with one broad brush isn't fair, either. (I'm not accusing you of doing so at all, csue - I'm addressing this as much to those of us who will Google up this thread in the future).
In my opinion, DoD and the Army have done precious little so far to help spouses and dependents prepare for this relocation, so I have the feeling that more and more of us will soon be appearing on forums such as this one.

Harper Woods is going down the toilet, so no, I would NOT buy in Harper Woods.
Harper Woods will be full ghetto in 10 years or so.
Also, you have a high school-aged daughter? If so, you will have to pay for private schools. Harper Woods Schools are a disaster.

Absolutely not, do not move to Harper Woods. If you seen on the news about 17 home invasions in the last 2 weeks for a city of 2 square miles, along with the rash of armed robberies in broad daylight infront of peoples homes, you'd strongly reconsider. Consider North Warren, Sterling Heights, Fraser, etc.

Take a look at Grosse Pointe Woods. There are great values west of Mack. Take a look at homes on Littlestone, Broadstone, Severn, Prestwick and Newcastle.

I'd steer clear of Harper Woods, Eastpointe, Roseville, Warren, Center Line etc. Yes, there are amazing deals in those areas but there is a reason for that.
Grosse Pointe Woods or northern St. Clair Shores is where I would start my search.

Harper Woods is a very nice area to live. Close to everything, nice people and neighborhoods -- the only thing it's missing is the pointless rudeness and hostility you find next door in Grosse Pointe.

thanks for your info everyone. although its qite depressing for my circumstances at least i have the low down. I have looked at the other towns suggested but for the space we need and the price i just cant afford it. there is one more house in port huron to look at and if that dosent pan out...or one of you tell me Port huron is another hub of evil..I think i will tell my husband he should rent an apartment in warren and just come home once every 6 weeks to visit.
