!! ??? !! Are you talking about downtown Detroit or downtown Chicago? I don't see how what Detroit has to offer compares to Manhattan in any sort of a way (unless you want to talk about the ease with which you can get mugged).

"Crime downtown is almost nonexistent."

This site claims so far this year there were over 500 crimes in a 1 mile radius of 200 Renaissance Center, Detroit, MI 48243.

Just say'in.

A lot of cars get broken into in some areas of downtown becuase idiots leave valuable ni plain sight ont he seat or dash.

Hoever you need to better define "downtown" There are nice parts of downtown and there are areas within 2 miles of downtown that I would not go into for a million dollars. 2 miles is a long way, especially in certain directions and is well outside of downtown. 2 miles down Jefferson put you at the edge of Del Rey, not so nice there. 2 miles upriver probably puts you in one of the nicer historic neighborhhods. Pretty nice there. 2 miles up Woodward is WSU, that is a decent area all the way through. However veer off to the West a few degrees and you end up in a pretty awful area.

I have no qualms or discomfort at all walking around downtown at night as long as I stay in the good parts. You must use common sense. If you have no common sense then any part of downtown is dangerous for you. For that matter pretty much any place is dangerous for you.

Well today Downtown Detroit is offering the annual Hoe Down - a huge country music event on the waterfront that will be attended by tens of thousands of people. In a little while it will offer the Red Bull Air races. Then there are several other festivals, and eventually the free rock concerts at the ren cen will start on Fridays. Then there is the fireworks. . the DSO, the DIA, tere is a thread somewhere that goes on and on with the offerings downtown.
