Default Moving To Sterling Heights, MI

Hello,
We are military family and will be moving to Sterling Heights,MI. How is Sterling Heights? We are looking to rent a house/apartment/condo/townhouse. Can anyone suggest a good area to find nice place?

How are the Perserves in Sterling Heights? We saw them on the website but it's hard to get a lot of details about them. My husband will be working in Sterling Heights, but we do not have to live there. I just don't want him driving more than 45 min to work each day. I am a school teacher but I might not work depending on the area and plus we have a six month old baby. Any tips or suggetions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I grew up in Sterling Heights and lived there all my life-it used to be a wonderful place to live. If your interested in moving into little Iraq you'll love it! Every home has multi family living in it including the full layouts in the garages (leather couches and all!!!)

Not to bash Sterling Heights since I had so many memories there but, I just wanted to give a heads up. Lots of violence around- fights in movie theaters and bowling centers all the time and forget going to any night clubs.

Not sure what you mean by Perserves of Sterling Heights? never heard of that before.

Good luck on your search! you might want to try a bit more north of there like Shelby Township or Washington Twp.

Sterling Heights isn't a bad area by any means! I grew up there. But if you want a very nice area to live in close to shopping and freeways, I'd suggest Utica, Shelby Township, Washington Township, Macomb Township or anything in that surrounding area. Be wary of Mt. Clemens and certain areas of Clinton Township.

Dont exclude Fraser either. Small town feeling and less crime than most cities around.

I live in Utica on the Sterling Hts. and Shelby border. It's a superb place to live with excellent schools, parks, and close proximity to shopping, highways, etc., etc.

I have no clue why someone called it Little Iraq. I mean, there is a large Chaldean and Arabic population, but there's also many other countries' citizens represented...It's a great, happy melting pot IMHO. And, well, you can check City-Data to get the stats. People are friendly, family-oriented, and also, Sterling Heights has been listed as one of the safest cities in which to live...again, check out the Internet as well as City-Data.

I've never had an issue with anyone or with any crime in the 7 years I've lived here. It's a nice quiet place to raise a family.

Best of luck with your relocation and hope you enjoy Sterling Heights

Sterling Heights is pretty nice, if it were me I'd go to Rochester Hills though. There is a bigger minority population in Sterling Heights though than many other surrounding cities. And the schools aren't as good as those some of the other surrounding cities.

Sterling Heights has less crime than many city-suburbs of its age and size.
I wouldn't move anywhere on the lower east side (Fraser), but Macomb Township is the definition of bland.

The chief plus for Shelby Township might be traffic (Rochester Road is awful), but you're also farther away from everything ... and you don't live in Oakland County, "Michigan's OC."

Don't listen to me, because my family does not. They shop out at 26 Mile Road and M-53. Yes, Rochester's shopping centers are aging, but why drive farther?

My grandmother lives in Royal Oak, and my mom's first sister lives in Madison Heights. Neither have ever complained about crime. The older Detroit suburbs are safer than most older Chicago suburbs, which are definitely cleaner and nicer than most inner Cleveland suburbs.

The Preserves is in the Vineyards subdivision, is it not? That is a great place to live, close to all the shopping, M-59 and M-53, plus Utica Community schools are great!

We have lived in Rochester Hills and also in Shelby Twp. We rented in both places. In Shelby we rented a HUGE apartment right next to StonyCreek Metro Park on 26 mile. I think the name of the complex was The Community at StonyCreek. We really loved that area. Rochester Hills was nice but we liked Shelby better. We rented a much larger place for a lot less money.
