moving to Farmington Hills
I am going to be moving into Farmington Hills within the next year. Could anyone tell me about the city? Schools, healthcare, public safety, crime, restaurants, shopping, etc. would be great. I would like to hear both the positive and negative things about Farmington Hills. Schools, healthcare, public safety, crime, restaurants, shopping, etc. would be great.

Pretty safe and nice place within close distance to the nice downtown in Famington. The south parts are quite different from the north. It's a large city really...

It's a very nice area there. My only recommendation would be as far to the northwest as possible. The southeast part of Farmington Hills has some "low rent" districts.

My sister and her daughter (husband and kids included) moved from the Western Suburbs to Farmington Hills about 5 years ago. They absolutely love it. I am sure that there are negatives, but they haven't mentioned any to me. They feel like they are getting a private school quality education in the public schools.
I guess the only negative they have encountered, is that it is a bit of a schlep to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. However, I understand that Henry Ford Hospital system is opening a branch in their area.
If I moved back to Mi, Farmington Hills would be a place I would consider.

That one little corner off Grand River near the Farmington border is not beautiful, but not bad either, just older homes.

What about the area off Grand River adn 9 Mile? Is it safe? I noticed that there are 2 trailer parks within a mile.

Trailer parks are automatically not safe? Wow. That is the area I was referring to that's a little older, but I think it's perfectly safe.

I would love to post a reply here... I have lived in Farmington Hills, MI for over 21 years. Because I rented homes the first few years living here and bought two homes in this city since then, I have had my children attend the different elementary, middle, and high schools in this district. I can give you the good and bad of this city...
Schools: The school system is very good. We were happy with the teachers and staff of this district. However, one of the high schools (there are three in this district) here can be considered "violent". It is because "they" are letting other kids come to our schools from other districts... a lot of these kids live by themselves at a nearby apartment on the weekdays to "have the zip code" to attend our schools here. I do not have a problem with it, but it is starting to get out of hand and if I may say again... violent. Violent in a few words: that security is high at the school - at all the doors and the parking lots during school hours at all times.
Police: Farmington Hills (FH) is larger than the City of Farmington. If you come here to live, by all means... choose FH! FH offers a lot of different cultures, sub divisions, and shopping. The FH Public Safety (police) is outstanding too. It is an old saying here in FH, "if you want to avoid a ticket for speeding 2 miles over the limit or j-walking... have a 3 mile radius outside of the City of Farmington!" The City of Farmington is VERY small and public safety has nothing better to do then have 3 police cars stop a little old lady for driving below the speed limit! (okay, being sarcatic here, but you get the point). It is not that the crime rate is lower there... it is the way the City police treats the community verses FH!
I loved FH and the City of Farmington for many years, but recently I have noticed a change in the people. They seem arrogant and rude. It doesn't feel like a community anymore. I have been part of this community and have been highly involved in this community too... So, with that being said, I can truly speak from experience.
Best Areas to live in: If you choose the City of Farmington, Downtown Farmington is nice… the homes are older and has a lot of historic homes. “Downtown Farmington” – Like the reply stated above… is only one block long…..the corner of Farmington Road and Grand River is basically it for “Downtown”.
FH has many beautiful areas to live in too! Most of the larger subs are on the north side of FH - However, there are a LOT of subs that offer more land and different homes throughout this area! I prefer more land and the beauty of nature, so we have a beautiful ranch in an older sub. Yes, the area of Grand River/8 Mile Road, between Middlebelt and Farmington Road are “less desirable locations”, but most of the homes are clean and maintained no matter what “income bracket” they live in. There are a few mobile homes at that location as well.
Overall: FH is close to all the freeways…minutes from Detroit… shopping within walking distance… and a lot of restaurants to choose from. We have MANY cultures here… ALL different races live here. (I am one of the .07% of the Asians here LOL)
If you want to contact me and let me know what type of area you are looking for, I could give you some suggestions on where to start your search. Good luck and I sure hope this was helpful!

I've lived in FH for about five years. I love how close we are to shopping (Novi, Livonia, West Bloomfield, etc). We have quick access to all of the major highways, so getting to any of our friends houses around the suburbs is quick and easy. There are some extremely nice areas and some not so nice. Overall, it's a very safe city, though. Wonderful library system that is shared with Farmington. Actually, a lot of city services are shared between Farmington and FH, and I'm not 100% sure where the border between the cities is--it's pretty seamless. Nice downtown area. The area is quite diverse, especially the east edge next to Southfield where many neighborhoods are majority black now or will be within a decade. There's also east Asians, Indians, and a ton of other ethnicities represented as well.

Farmington Hills has a hospital! Botsford Hospital is located on Grand River and is a full care hospital. Not really sure why you'd want to drive to Beaumont or Henry Ford...
Farmington Hills is a great place to live. If you have a family, there are a ton of "city run" activites. Go to the city's web site. In the quick links you will find a recreation guide that lists the events, camps, classes, etc.
I agree, that I would not want to live in the east side of the city, since there is a little more crime.
The schools are top notch. We can usually make it downtown Detroit within 20 min. (When the Lodge is open.)
