Worst areas in Detroit (Warren, Dearborn: houses, rent, work)

The east side of Detroit is horrible looking in many areas, but the people are nicer than on the west side. Good neighborly people are on the east side of town. If you are ever down on your luck and actually have to live in the city choose the east side. IMO its much safer as well.

Cracks me up that it bothers someone so much when a thread takes on a new life. Thing is that if you read all the posts, other posters will come in and comment and leave a different, additional question and someone will answer that and so on...no biggie really. Especially when the OP asked this questions eons ago and it was probably answered a bunch of times over.

New people are just coming on and searching the info, finding it and then asking new questions. It is all good. Means some are using the search button.

There are some 'bad intersections' along Seven and Eight Mile. One being Seven Mile and Chalmers. It's been my opinion that Seven Mile across Detroit in general is more of the 'rougher' corridor.

Isnt chalmers where eminem moved when he broke up with kim??? (he said that in an interview)

(btw, it would be nice if u compared it to brooklyn, so i could get an idea of wat u mean by bad, since i live in brooklyn, and there are so much different levels of "ghetto" here)

I would have to say the Mack and Bewick area would be the worst area in the city,that's deep eastside.

i thought he was just over-exaggerating, but once i went to visit....i stopped doubting him!

the food is delicious tho! and actually, there is a lot of stuff to do, considering that it is a "suburb" and usually suburbs are boring anyways, i live in san jose, california and we have places that close way earlier and less things to do, ALTHOUGH, we can go to the pacific ocean in about 30-45 min. haha.

Dearborn is getting more and more run down in my opinion. All my family who lives in the Dearborn/Dearborn Heights area is looking to get out and to a better suburb.

First of all it is a big mishapen city so of course it's going to have pockets that are nice and pockets that are bad. There are still some neighborhoods on the east and west side that are nice. Parts of East Dearborn around Greenfield and Warren are really ugly and run down, and look like Detroit. There are parts of east Dearborn near Michigan that are still fairly nice. Throughout Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, neighborhoods are losing their integrity by having smaller houses ripped down in favor of large mansion "bigfoot" houses in neighborhoods that they don't look like they belong in. All of Dearborn appears to be very hard hit by the recent economic situation, and neighborhoods are being swallowed up into Detroit. Tons of businesses are going empty on Dearborn's main roads. At the same time, West Dearborn, around Telegraph and Cherry Hill (and branching down to Michigan Ave, etc), is fairly wealthy, and homes demand high prices. Being in school in this area, a lot of people here have a Birmingham like mentality, and there is a lot of snobbery in west Dearborn. West Dearborn/Dearborn Heights seem to very divided as well, as I've heard the hush hush words when a black person moves into a neighborhood, and the negative attitudes about it. And I have nothing against the arabic people moving in here (aside from their liking to tearing down houses and rebuilding them huge and unsightly, which of course all of them don't do). I'd rather have this than completely empty stores and houses, but the trend is certainly to open arabic oriented businesses along Ford Rd, which contrary to what some people say is not diverse, when it is one culture having a monopoly. It's no different than having an all white, non diverse community.

Dearborn Heights has poor poor leadership who attempt to do good for the city but really do nothing. They waste their time on things and pass stupid ordinances (have you seen the news lately? As of yesterday, ice cream drivers can't play music in DH).

Dearborn does have things to offer however. I think some of the historic Ford neighborhoods south of Michigan are absolutely beautiful, and the ever growing business base on Michigan is really great, and we are being offered more and more businesses to frequent in Dearborn's historic areas. Remember that Dearborn wasn't always a suburb. It was a city in its own right until Detroit's expanding neighborhoods met it. Same with Garden City, Wyandotte, Trenton, Ecorse, River Rouge, Clawson, Royal Oak, Rochester, Ferndale, and even Romulus! They were all separate cities before they became all contiguous as suburbs.

My family and I moved from Southfield and Joy in Detroit (which is a s**t hole), to Plymouth Twp. and that's a really nice and safe place. I was quite the minority as a black to say the least, but the folks there are nice and I made lotsa friends. Plymouth is my favorite town because it's safe and quiet, but it has stuff to do and isn't in bfn. My parents still live there and I just moved out to Garden City which is pretty nice too.
