That neighborhood is a s-hole because of the black people there whom you left.

And that above statement comes from a black man who lives in the neighborhood (me). But I am emotional - I refuse to move to suburbs to live amongst the same people who fled Detroit because they didn't want to live next to people who look like me.

They waste their time on things and pass stupid ordinances (have you seen the news lately? As of yesterday, ice cream drivers can't play music in DH).
Hey pal, you may think it's a waste of time, but try working midnights and hearing "Turkey In The Straw" or "Pop Goes the Weasel" over a tinny loudspeaker about 30 times between 9:00am and noon and see how you like it! You remember when Curley would go nuts every time he heard "Pop Goes The Weasel" and Larry and Moe would play it on either a violin (Larry) or a loudspeaker when Curley was about to get knocked out in the boxing ring, so Curly would turn into a killing machine? Well, that's why he was like that. There was some guy who spoke English as a second language driving up and down Curly's street all day in a converted rusted-out Wonderbread truck playing "Pop Goes The Freaking Weasel" all day!

I'd much rather hear the tinkly, hand-operated chimes and at least try to delude myself into believing that there is an immaculate white purpose-built icecream truck puttering down my street being driven by a clean-shaven guy in a clean white uniform complete with bow tie and Pershing cap waiting to sell me my Push-Up.......instead of some meat on a stick.

That kind of ordinance is passed because of a squeaky wheel or a squeaky neighborhood association. They don't just do it out of the blue. It shows that they ARE listening to complaints and at least trying to do something in this economy, only a couple miles away from Detroit, to make quality of life a little better. Now go get a $10.00 midi keyboard and play "The Entertainer" about 250 times.................

Plymouth is my favorite town because it's safe and quiet, but it has stuff to do and isn't in bfn. My parents still live there and I just moved out to Garden City which is pretty nice too.
Good to see another happy Garden City area resident.

You have a point, but in my opinion if they listened to the other complaints about needing more than one ordinance officer, needing quick ordinance action to put down the construction of big foot houses, and appointing someone to a vacant city council seat after over a year, they would be doing things a lot more sensibly than arguing about the ice cream truck ordinance. And in my opinion the days of Good Humor clean shaven, ice cream man is gone as you said. But I don't think too many ice cream vendors will be insalling bells just to sell in Dearborn Heights. I think the days of ice cream trucks in DH is over.

Back about 12-15 years ago when I used to be pretty heavy into the street racing scene we frequented a lot of shady "hoods"

down on Jefferson near one of the entrances to Zug island was pretty scary I'm not sure if that's Delray or not.

Warren and Livernois

12 st and Clairmont

Southfield and Joy

Some of the areas near French rd seemed pretty bad .

As I recall, French Road was where the big boys played. Lots of cars trailered in.

Re: the bigfoot houses, I'm on the fence with those. On the one hand, they don't fit with the neighborhood, on the other hand, it's a chance for the city to put a $300,000.00 house where a $100,000.00 house (or a vacant $20,000.00 house) once stood and restart the clock on the homestead taxes to triple or quadruple or more of what they used to be. I can understand why a city that's almost broke might need to do that.

Jefferson by Fort Wayne and Zug Island is bad, but I don't think it's nearly the worst. Not a whole lot left to steal down there. I wish they'd give tours by Fort Wayne again.

there was a lot of action in French, but the real serious high dollar races where they didn't want a lot of people around happened on 12th st.

Crazy times back then

It's a $300,000 house....if they actually sold for that. So many of them are sitting now, and the prospect of selling a mansion in a tight a economy is a lot bleaker than a normal house. Fact of the matter most people who can afford a house like that are not buying them in Dearborn/Dearborn Heights. Those who are buying them here, mostly middle-eastern people, are actually buying them less, and some of the values of these houses are dipping under $200,000 (most actually) and back into the range of where the smaller houses could sell for, and not ruin the neighborhood. I know plenty of people who are leaving the neighborhoods where these houses are going up because they simply don't get sun in their yards several hours a day due to these huge obstructions, and that the integrity of their neighborhoods has been compromised so much. Is it really any improvement to tear down a well built, modest house, and put up a large one that MIGHT sell for a little more than the smaller ones, and in turn have more neighbors sell their houses to get away from these things?

lol, if anyone could tell you this, it would be me.
lol i come from the silicon valley of california, everyone here is mixed, there are mexican, black, asian, middle eastern and everything in between. One of the most diverse areas that i've ever been to, so yes, i know how a diverse community is suppose to look, and NO WHERE in michigan has that. lol

I am a white girl, that is marrying an arab, his dad is a muslim preacher, and all the women and men in his family are marrying someone that was arranged to them from lebanon, yes its VERY DIFFERENT. lol.

so, yes, they are creating a "monopoly" but how come there is this monopoly? Me and my fiance who calls it "boaterville", have talked about this thoroughly, seriously, if they didn't create a community that was reliant on one another, how could thye have survived? If they stayed seperate and non-reliant, there is much more room for failure financially and emotionally, because of the arab lifestyle. It is common for a large family to live together, and if they don't they live around the corner from one another, and this is what it is like in dearborn along ford rd.

I don't find this as horrible at all, white people don't move into this area, and the arabs are just tryin to do good for their family, can you blame them?

I dunno, i don't find it as a 'monopoly' persay, just something that has evolved through time out of economic necessity, and i very much enjoy arab food lol, so i dont' mind.

From the satelite images i`ve seen the Harper van Dyke area seems worse in terms of vacant land. But I don`t know what`s the most dangerous area. Where are the highest concentration of vacant homes in Detroit. Are there any streets you could drive through and see every house there vacant if so where exactly.
