I just read this thread and didn't see anything on Warren. I'm staying there Friday and Saturday night, then heading to the Lions/Redskins game on Sunday. Thoughts on Warren, anyone?

Default Going to Detroit

Great thread, especially considering the fact the me and a buddy are heading out to Detroit in February. The purpose for our trip is two-fold: 1) we want to see a Wings game, and 2) we want to visit movie locations from the movie 8-mile, as well as the recently produced 'Gran Torino'. I've been able to track down most of the addresses and locations, so we're good in this respect; however, I was hoping some of you could shed some light on two Caucasian Canadians driving around Detroit aimlessly to visit movie locations on 8 mile road, and through some of Highland Park, MI.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Also, we're thinking about staying in a hotel downtown - any additional thoughts on this would be appreciated!

You can go to the worst areas on Sunday morning no problem. Just have a cell phone and a number for a reliable tow company and taxi just in case your car quits.

Most parts of town are not that bad. Detroit is a fun town, the people are great.

I nominate the area around Mount Elliot at Conant for the worst.

I agree with Sunday morning as a good time, but mainly because of the lack of traffic. I drop my wife off everyday for work and drive back via different routes. Have had no problems. Check out Indian village, Palmer Park area as well as Woodard ave. I am always amazed to see the bordered up churches and mansions......

7 Mile & McNichols

but Detroit is not that bad. I currently live in Berkley with my mother (im a high school student) but after college and a couple of career moves, I plan to live in the nice parts of Detroit like Rosedale Park and Oakman Blvd.

highland park is probably the worst area of detroit. they don't have a police department because of funding. the sheriff is responsible for policing the area. if your going to go down there be careful. the best time would be around 8-11am because no one down there is awake. don't get lost. good luck, it's nothing like canada. please let us know what you think about it.

i'm from the eastside.
and like it's bad so ta speak.
but the westside of Detroit is gettin worse that the east.

to be specific.
Mack Ave.,
Dexter-Linwood,
and Zone 8 (8 mile).

those are the worst in my opinion.
some neighborhoods look worse then they are.
thats what you gotta realize.
so if you aint from the D and you scared you gonna get shot or sumthin.
dont worry.
just mind your business and you'll be find.
lock ya car though.

Before I start I have to say this (sorry) I'm white, I moved to Westland from Tucson, Az 6 years ago and I deliever foods for Amicci's in Hamtramck for many parts of Detroit, and whole parts of Highland Park. urgh i would say the worst area is in west of Woodward in Highland Park, Cass Corridor, east of Mt.Elliot and Contant, the worst apartment I ever had to deliever is the one on 600 Alferd St. just west of I-75, many prostitutes on Chene and West Grand Blvd, and many parts of 6 Mile and 7 Mile just north of Hamtramck and east of Highland Park in Detroit, and many more....just don't move there..visiting is ok long as you are driving! I got robbed 4 times and the first 3 I got away but the last time was in April 2008 I got robbed at the Mobil gas station on Caniff and I-75, two black dudes got in the car at the same time as I got in gettin' gun pointed tellin' me to drive everywhere they wants me to and got attacked, sliced me face with pocket knife, and dropped them off 5 am in the morning in the east side, so don't be stupid and watch ur back everytime and it can happen to u anywhere not just Detroit or Highland Park....Many non resident Detroit people from subs or where-ever would just visit in Downtown, Indian Village, WSU, and more...there's so much things to see in Detroit, it will inspire you so don't underdog the Motown, and I will always love Detroit.

how can anybody move from beautiful Arizona to the craphole Detroit? You must be a wanted fugitive. It is a know fact a lot of fugitives move to Detroit because their police cars aren't linked to the nationwide criminal computers. Detroit is beyond hope. The worst city I ever lived in
