The eastside of Detroit has some shady spots which includes 6 mile & Gratiot, 7 mile & Gratiot, Chalmers, Van Dyke, Harper and Mack. At night these neighborhoods are not safe to be around.

Default info on southwest detroit??

i just moved to detroit about a month ago and i live right on wayne states campus and go to school there part time. i just got a job as a case worker and all my clients stay in southwest detroit. i start in 2 weeks, ill be going to clients' homes, dealing w/ teenagers who just got out of lockup facilities and are trying to get on track back in their communities.

im just looking for any useful info people might have about southwest... maybe from people who have lived and/or worked in the area, not just statistics that i can look up myself. or does anyone know where you can find a good map of the area?

i'm really only looking for info that will help me to be more knowledgeable about the area... any comments meant to discourage me from working in that area or tell me how scary and dangerous it is are not needed...

thx so much in advance!

Wayne State campus area is pretty safe. A lot of police and security there. But don't too far east or west because its all ghetto! Southwest Detroit is a TOTAL craphole. When I worked for Detroit Edison I use to HATE going down there. Thats where the poor Hispanic population is located and there is a lot of gang activity. But I still don't understand how anybody can move to Detroit especially if you are white. There are so many better communities to live just north of 8 Mile. Ferndale, Royal Oak, Pleasant Ridge, Birmingham are great

I got robbed 4 times and the first 3 I got away but the last time was in April 2008 I got robbed at the Mobil gas station on Caniff and I-75, two black dudes got in the car at the same time as I got in gettin' gun pointed tellin' me to drive everywhere they wants me to and got attacked, sliced me face with pocket knife, and dropped them off 5 am in the morning in the east side, so don't be stupid and watch ur back everytime and it can happen to u anywhere not just Detroit or Highland Park....Many non resident Detroit people from subs or where-ever would just visit in Downtown, Indian Village, WSU, and more...there's so much things to see in Detroit, it will inspire you so don't underdog the Motown, and I will always love Detroit.

Wow, Don't be sorry that your white, I am and I'm not one bit sorry!

It makes me wonder how much Coleman Young really accomplished in his 20 years as mayor of Detroit - other than integrating the Detroit PD and the Reinessance Center.

Sorry, I am going to have to facepalm this.
It's not worth it to talk about how bad the city is. It's more benificial to be part of the solution and start getting the word around that the city is making numerous attempts to turn around it's reputation that has been acquired shortly after '67.
I mean, the city went from #1 dangerous city to #4 or 5. That's improvement. While it would be better if it were up there with New York, Seattle, Portland, it's still good for a city that has been through a lot.
