Thanks for your replies.
Yes, Riverfront towers are near Joe Louis Arena. Zipcode is 48226.
I was inclined to get apartments due to two reasons -
1. Security is good in the apartments
2. Near to my workplace so I can save time in commute.
The questions are -
1. Is it safe to come from some place (eg airport, shopping mall etc) to the apartments at night time ?
2. Is it safe to travel in peoplemover after 6:00 pm ?
3. What are good places for weekly gorcery shopping, hang around etc. ?
I appreciate your time and your inputs.
Thanks !

1-I would say so!
2-Yes, the downtown area is relatively (key word-*relatively*) safe.
3-Eastern Market is a one-stop shopping area where you can get anything you need/want there and it's fairly close to downtown. It beats the supermarkets by far! Greektown is what i like to refer as a mini-Las Vegas or mini-New Orleans (of old). Lots to do there. Wayne State campus down the Cass Corridor has the eclectic thing going on. Woodward has its spots.

Hands down Southwest.
The neighboorhods along Michigan Ave are very dangerous.
Lots of gang activity, violence and drug dealing.
Chances are your neighbor there just got out of prison.
East side of Detroit is really run down and nasty. Everybody is mean and wears a perpetual scowl.
On the West side of Detroit if your property is not locked, nailed, or welded down it will got stolen, even if you are home.
If your a Detroit fan check out the homes in the Woodmont/Grandmont neighborhoods. The homes are very well kept and with you so many in the area under foreclosure you could get one for a steal. (No pun intended)

I agree!
There are pockets of southwest Detroit that makes it extremely dangerous. One is the Visger area between Fort St. and Jefferson in the very southwestern tip of Detroit!
Another is along Michigan Ave-(which Mike Jones mentions) and the many sub-neighborhood/streets along Michigan Ave. Wyoming, Central, Vernor, Green,Livernois,McGraw.(etc.)
Delray is another area that's really bad.
Yeah, this the general area where i grew up. (by Delray)

i can't really say one part is bad. the inner city kids of today always say the east side harder or the west sides harder. to me there all about the same. Go down by mack and bewick st on the east side. Or over in the south west by fort wayne. maybe even up by 6mile. and Does woodard still have all them damn hookers? haven't been there in a year. but uh there's a lot places. shoot parts of gratiot um Coolidge st and all around there.

There are some bad areas in these cities.
But they are not so out cold like South West or the others I mentioned.
You know darn well that a brother does not have to find trouble.
He can catch a case just walking down those streets, it will fall on his head.
Last summer a crackhead on Visiger was trying to sell me a mangy stray dog he found, claiming it was some fancy purebred.
Another wanted my jacket for some swisher sweets and a pint of Jim beam.
I love the hood.

Mike it sounds like you love da hood, and being in the hood will increase your street knowledge. Also understand that Southwest Detroit is the main dumping ground for peoples from all colors. To me living here in the inner-city has prepared me to take on the racist world outside of Detroit.
Another thing every one of them streets that was names holds a place in history because of the riots that took place. I know you don't just see Blacks doing these things. There is whites who come from Taylor,Woodhaven,Allen
Park,Southgate buying drugs or sex. Do you know why they come to Southwest Detroit to do these things? Its because they can't do that bull** in their town, and if you noticed most people who get busted for drugs is from the suburbs. Hang in there Mike.
