Default Metro Detroit Worse Areas That's Not Mentioned.

Troy is where rapist and killers be, Sterling Heights is where the Klan and skinheads be, and I am here to say don't let these suburbs outside of Detroit fool you.. Farmington Hills, They have a problem with someone letting the air out of all the city school buses. Poor Pontiac...another Viet nam. Taylor, Southgate,Woodhaven,Lincoln Park, all have crimes (mostly Bank Robberies), and its amazing how they keep it undercover.

So I guess I am saying anywhere you go there is some kinda crime activitie going on. Sad but true most so-called White suburb cities seem to have some of the major problems Detroit have, but is always swepted under the rug the
majority of the time. So what one must do (especially) if you asking on here is to find out for yourself, due to the fact that most on here do not live in Metro Detroit, and if they did its history.

Default My 2 cents

I haven't been to Detroit yet. It was really NEVER on my list of places to visit and I am quite an open minded traveler. Anyway, I will be visiting Detroit next month because I am looking into a PhD program at UM- Ann Arbor. I know a couple of people in Detroit and decided, "why not?" I always research the places in which I travel. Detroit is the #2 unsafest city. Troy is the 5th safest city. There is a such thing as statistics- look them up. I'm from NYC and I must say I have some reservations about visiting the city of Detroit. Based on what I've read, statistics and the MAJORITY of people I meet from Detroit, there is no way in HELL I would live there. As I said earlier, I have traveled many places, national and international but the Detroit people I encounter have got to be some of the most ignorant people I have ever met. Who brags on the negativity of their city? "Don't mess with the D. We were almost the murder capital." Just plain ignorant. Even the politicians and local celebrities there have their illegal side action. And this is something I know for a fact. Not something that was read in the tabloids. Brother X, get a grip. Stop blaming everything on the white man. If I had to encounter you I would be afraid also- AND I'M BLACK.

Hopefully, my visit there will change the image I have of Detroit.

detroit is what it is.... and is what you make of it.
if you take precautions, no matter how "bad" a city/area is, you will be fine.
if you walk around afraid of it, people will know, and will take advantage.
know where you're going/what you're doing.

i am a young, small, white girl... and i live in detroit, just north of hamtramck. definitely not the best of neighborhoods, but certainly not the worst. i've lived in the same neighborhood for 2 years and never had a single problem.
i've walked around at night, by myself, though always aware and prepared for something to happen.
i've walked around at night with small groups of people.
i've been waiting for the bus downtown, at night, by myself. you just have to be aware of your surroundings.
if you get to know, or at least acknowledge, your neighbors and people that come to your neighborhood, you generally won't have problems.

if you act like you belong, you will be accepted.

I love Detroit. I don't live there now, but I visit to go to concerts, eat at the cool restaurants, etc. It's on the upswing now, don't you think? Lots of good, positive things happenin' despite what else is going on with the state's economy.
Yeah, the old Cass Corridor was known as the skid row of Detroit, so to speak, especially some years ago. It has been absorbed by Midtown and yes things are on the up and up. Now the former corridor is home to the Tastefest at New Center area. Delray would get my vote. There's alot of incredible new and unique housing ranging from new and renovated lofts, condos, townhomes, apartments, and classic skyrise residential available now that is not available anywhere else in the State. The core is a bright spot in Michigan. Keep visiting!

Those people saying things like that probably weren't even from the city.
Just suburbanites clawing for some identity since the burbs have close to none, and plenty of problems. The majority of SE Michiganders say their from Detroit or "the Detroit area" when they travel. Detroit is the only place in Michigan most people know of commonly (unless you have visited Mi. or went to school here etc) but they are probably from Roseville or somthing. Any major city has some corruption, look at the former New York police chief Bernard Kerik or Guiliani for that matter. Some of the best things to do in Michigan are downtown check it out and enjoy.

warren and roseville are reasonably safe, unless you get too close to 8 mile. madison heights and clawson are reasonably safe, too. these 4 areas are livable and affordable, but not what i would consider "nice" or "beautiful."

utica- i dont know. hazel park, mt. clemens/parts of clinton twp, southfield, oak park, are all too questionable for me to live there.

ferndale is unique and my fav suburb- though not considered super safe, i'd still feel comfortable living there. berkley is safe, nice area, affordable.

northville, walled lake, wixom, those areas seems safe but out of the way.

i hear livonia is safe.

dont know about the others.

roads in winter: i'm from even further north, so i'm used to bad roads. so they seem fine to me, but most people complain. i am used to driving in feet an feet of snow... so i'd ask someone else on that one.

I have to agree with mariatherese on the above cities. Just to be safe stick with anything north of M-59. The areas that are questionable north of M-59 you will be able to tell just by driving through them.
