there are still nice areas within the Detroit. However, the criminal elements knows no borders. Also, there are a lot of vacant homes in the City.

Perhaps one should not leave out the Brightmoor area (NW Detroit- along Fenkell ave. from the Southfield expway up to Telegraph Rd.). Ex-Detroit Police Officer, Jeffry Scott Hansen, has written an interesting novel entitled "WARPATH" that tells the story of the nieghborhoods' demise.

Where are there any nice areas left? I'd like to know.

Default I Love downtown

Let me just say this....Downtown is fairly safe. I've lived in the Lofts at Riverfront and recently moved right downtown (I didn't like having to get in my car to go everywhere from the lofts.) I walk around during the day and at night. I ride the people mover and feel very safe. I do my grocery shopping etc. outside the city and never feel unsafe driving. I've hopped on the people mover by myself (an average size female) in the evening if I get in the mood to hit the bar, or get a sub from Tubby's or a milkshake from ColdStone, or some coney's and always felt 100% safe. Although I always believe in being cautious.

There are a lot of bars and restaurants. I've been walking around to some of the shops in the area too. The only problem I have is that a lot of the places cater to the business crowd and are therefore only open during 9-5 or so during the week and not at all on the weekends.

The weekend of the boat show, we wanted a sandwich after walking around at the show so went over to the Ren-Cen. Pot Belly's was closed, across the way at Millender Mr. Pita was closed, after that I assumed Bellacino's was closed too as that is in an office building. I ended up with wings from Sweetwater (which are the best, if you've never had them, by the way).

The LEAST safe I've ever felt was when I needed to get to a clients near the Lodge and Linwood. I missed my turn and stayed on Linwood too long. It was really really shady!!

You must admit that the Palmer Woods, Sherwood Forest, and Rosedale Park areas have a lot of nice homes. A problem, which may be getting worse, are the schools throughtout the City.

Hi,
I moved to Roseville 3 years ago and feel it's a good area to start- your close to everything. I really can't say there is no crime, there is but there is everywhere in MI due to the economy. I would love to move out of the state period since both my husband and myself became unemployed. Work here is horrible and things are only going to get worse. If you have a job in MI you should be happy. Hey I'll sell you my house so I can get out of here.

Good Luck

Detroit is not as bad people make it out to be if look at crime rates and population Detroit is far safer than cities like Flint, Saginaw, and several other places that I have lived. If I were you I would not believe the hype about Detroit and just go experience things for yourself!

North of M-59? Your practically in the country! I just moved to Royal Oak from Clarkston and LOVE IT. I definately disagree with this post. There are plenty of safe area's south of M-59, for instance Troy is the 4th or 5th safest city in America!
I don't know what the worst areas of Detroit are, but DO know to stay away from 8 mile and Wyoming, Highland Park, most of the East and Southwest sides of the city. I DIDN'T SAY ALL, just most. Downriver directly south of downtown is pretty bad too.

Default getting better

I think the city of Detroit is on the rise. It's interesting to note that the city is leading the area for the most new housing starts each month. It is the only area in SE Michigan that is growing in that regard. A glimmer of hope in a tough housing market.
The taxes are very high-- and the city has to keep cutting services. Plus, the city income tax is a turnoff for many, not to mention insurance. And-- if you have kids, you won't want to send them to DPS.

The whole WSU Corridor along Woodward is seeing lots of growth-- as well as lofts downtown and along the riverfront on E. Jefferson.
Palmer Woods-- which is near the Detroit Golf Club between 7 and 8 mile west of Woodward has downright GORGEOUS homes. And, if my memory serves right, isn't there a shopping center being built just north of the Fairgrounds? That's huge for the city.

Default W. Outer Drive?

I might be going to Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit as for most of my rotations. Its on West Outer Drive b/t 7mile and McNichols Rd. I know there may be times that I will be working late. I am just wondering how safe it is there. I really liked the hospital, but the area wasn't the greatest. I am mainly concerned about driving home at night. I am pretty sure a security guard can walk me to my car if I want, I am just wondering about the rest of the area. I am not planning on living there, just working there. Any tips?
