There's a demolished building across the street from the new Westin (former Cadillac hotel) and I was wondering what it used to be?

Are you talking about the Lafayette building?

You mean the "Book-Cadillac" hotel.

The building that was across the street was the Lafayette Building, it was demolished in 2009 through the beginning of 2010. I believe they just finished cleaning up the demolition work, or they are close to being finished.

The only future plans for the site, as the city says "is a park". But who really knows what it will turn into. Sadly, probably another parking lot.

You are probably referring to the Lafayette Building on Michigan Ave -- American and Lafayette Coney Island remain intact.

Thie city council has an obsession with empty rubble filled lots and a hatred for landmark historic buildings. Ergo the rubble you see that was once the Lafeyette.

It's too bad more of these old buildings weren't able to be saved. In many cases it wasn't for a lack of trying. It's also a wonderful miracle that some of them were restored and put back into use.

Have to take the good with the bad, I guess.
