Default What's so -tuckey about Taylor?

Well, I haven't been to Taylor, but I have seen pictures of it. It seems like an average place. I wouldn't call it nice, but it's doesn't look bad. What I'm left wondering is where the term "Taylortuckey" came from. I hear people use the term all the time and I frankly can not understand it.

Any insights?

I'm pretty sure it comes from the roots of many of the people.

Take it from a Kentuckian, however, the two are nothing alike. I kind of prefer Taylor.

Haven't spent much time in the NW and SW corners?

I thought it was quite like KY, a lot like Harlan?

Living in Taylor prepared me for all the mobeal trailors and cars on ceement blocks I have seen between Corbin and Harlan.

I thought about joining the Taylor-tucky Hunting Club, but opted for the NRA instead.

You've never been to Harlan, obviously.

Harlan is the pinnacle of poverty, a massive drug problem, lack of education, lack of clean running water.

I know a lot of kids who never had shoes or shirts in the deep mining towns of Harlan co., our house was the only one feeding from the creek that had a filter, a lot of families ran straightpipes of sewage into the water, which was then reuptaken to be used, no filter, as bathing and drinking water by families downstream. People rarely even have trailors, my neighbor had a home built with thin sheets of plywood arranged in a rudimentary fashion that washed away pretty often.

You're talking about white-trash, I'm talking about unseen poverty. The nicest parts of Harlan are about as safe as Detroit, with a little more urban decay.

The show Justified makes Harlan look livable, but in most places, you're without basic access to infrastructure and surrounded by people who cannot read.

At least in Taylor people are literate.

From what I remember seeing heading toward Henry Ford/Greenfield Village last summer and confirmed on google maps street view to me: looks like pretty much a typical working class suburb. Not too different from what you might see in the south/southwest Chicago suburbs. From what I saw, it looked like there were even some upscale looking subdivisions that may have been built in the 90s.

From what I gather, in metro Detroit working class suburbs get trash talked by the white collared Oakland suburbs as well as the black population as well. Its double trash talk.

I think Taylor cleaned itself up a bit in the late 90s. It still had a lot of open space considering how close-in it was and a lot of houses and condos were built in certain sections of the city. Southland is still a pretty good mall for the most part and doesn't have the ghetto feel of Northland or Eastland (or Macomb to a certain extent; Macomb is the "-tuckiest" shopping mall in metro Detroit). Also I believe the housing projects which contributed a goodly percentage of Taylor's crime were cleaned up a lot around this time. Taylor isn't a really desirable place but it's no worse than south Warren, Hazel Park, or south Madison Heights.

I was in Taylor last week and was really impressed by how nice it is. I was mostly on Telegraph and Goddard, and both look like they have been rebuilt and spruced up, along with ALOT of new retail and housing. It seemed like a real nice suburb, if you ask me.

Spend about 10 minutes watching who's coming and going from that new housing. Not exactly the kind of people I'd be comfortable calling "neighbor". I live in Novi for a reason.

Novi is probably my least favorite suburb. Yeah, it's safe and the schools are awesome... But who really wants to be surrounded by subdivisions, strip malls, and endless concrete? Taylor isn't that bad.

Taylor is not really that bad, but it is great fun to make fun of Taylor. If you live downriver, you will eventually end up shopping or going to some sort of business in Taylor. It is just a place. It is a bit more middle middle class than many other parts of downriver. It is pretty bland with no downtown and very little architecture of any value. The schools are not very good. The houses are mostly small. However it is not a terrible city. It does have some nice ameneties (a great sports center for hockey). Heritage park is really neat. It also has lots of shopping and movie theaters. However sometimes it is not clear what is in Taylor and what is in southgate. The people that you see in the Taylor area are just people. Yes, you see some odd ducks and/or signs of poverty here and there, but it is not a trashy city. I would not live there because of the schools and the lack of a downtown, but I seriously considered a neat house that we found that borders on Heritage Park (until we visited the schools).

Yes. If you want complete conformity and protection from anything unusual or different, if you are offended by seeing things or meeting people who are not just like you, ot like what you percieve people should be like, choose Novi. It is a great place to live in a bubble and never be stimulated or challeneged. That is the lifestyle that many people want and Novi is perfect for that lifestyle.

Personally, if I did not have kids I would choose taylor over Novi. It is less bland and conforming. Although there are some great parts of Novi outside the main part that are semi rural and really nice. I do not think that Taylor has any semi rural areas, but maybe I just did not realize that some of theose places are part of taylor. It is hard to tell where taylor begins or ends.
