Burtsbees - You have to keep in mind that Jeff is not a native of the area. He's still very nieve about it and what he writes and says about the city shows just how green he is to it all. Anyone that really knows the city of Detroit and the surrounding suburbs knows that a white person sitting at a light in a Detroit neighborhood (NOT down by the sports games, I'm talking a housing neighborhood!) is a sitting duck. Those who claim they aren't probably have only stuck to the safer tourist paths or have just gotten lucky thus far.

Sorry, not trying to flame you, but it's obvious to everyone but Helen Keller that Detroit is filled to the rim with crimes and various issues. But posts like yours make it sound like that's all there is to Detroit, and my experience, as well as many others, says otherwise.

If they just drive on I-75 or I-94 and get right off to the Sports games, then they will never see it! They keep that clean for a reason. You go so much as a block away from any location and you better have that gun loaded. They do NOT take kindly to white people, and that was told to me by a fellow BLACK co-worker who lives at 6 Mile/Gratiot. He doesnt have a problem with whites at all but he tells it like it is.

LMBO!! Like you know how much time and where I've been in Detroit. Of course I'm not going to roll up to the hood, why wouldn't I stick to safer tourist paths? Where is it you think I'm going in these pathetic presumptions? What I write is based on my experience thus far and those whom I work with who have lived here for decades and/or their entire lives.
For the 50-millionth time , I have never said or claimed that Detroit is not filled with issues...in fact I just said so (yet again) in my previous post . And while I've only lived here for a year I have, in fact, lived in or near several different metropolitan areas and each have various racial issues of their own...ever hear of the Tulsa Race Riots? So I come to Detroit with a viewpoint not skewed by having been born and raised here and having seen other metro areas deal with race issues in different ways, all with varying degrees of success, but all of them certainly more successful than Detroit.
Alarmist claims like "white people are sitting ducks at stop lights" are certainly true for some areas, but not true for all. And that is all I'm trying to say.

Again, when did I say there were no issues in Detroit? Of course there are many places any person would do well to avoid. But all encompassing statements that scoop up every inch of town into one bag labled " Beruit" is just silly, and not balanced.

Jeff - you are a rookie when it comes to the Detroit area. You have a lot to learn and your posts show it. I lMAO the stuff you write about the city. It shows you don't have a clue...

Oh, the horrors!
My husband and I ride bicycles in Detroit neighborhoods just about every weekend. We see people cooling off on their porches, children playing on the sidewalks, teens playing basketball, people of all ages riding bicycles, neighborhood parties and barbecues. We've been invited to join in. The most dangerous things we've encountered so far are broken beer bottles and wild dogs. The vast majority of Detroiters are good, friendly people who have lived in the same neighborhood their entire lives. Try smiling the next time a Detroiter sees you in their neighborhood. They probably think you work for the city.

All in your opinion only, RWF, which means less than nothing to me.
Judging from Cherry's post above mine, I have already learned more than you ever will.

I didn't know a fantasy world for cyclists was located in Detroit! Cherry must be bicycling into a parallel universe then.

Man, you beat me to saying that! It's exactly what I was going to post! With his attitude he's the type that has his guard down so far that he'll become a victim. His story will be on the news. You are so right! He's clueless and those type of people are the ones that often become the victims of all the crime.
Jeff, if you think that there isn't a crime problem with the city of Detroit I urge you to turn on the local news each evening for the next month. Or better yet, contact the Detroit Police Department and see what they say. LOL
