LOL....i love being around my people but dang can i hang out with some white people once in awhile? some asians? And if any black people are racist, it's because they read or hear comments from the likes of you. Most know that the majority of white people above 8 mile...excuse me 16 mile...think like you so yes we might automatically have an attitude with you unless we get to know you.

I moved to Hamtramck for the diversity: pierogi, shawarma, chevapi, curry, paczki, sliders, fattoush, lassi, and french bread baked daily. It's possible to love both apple pie and baklava.

There are around 850,000 people that live in Detroit. We don't all live in fear for our lives. We do have alot of problems - child illegitimacy, thievery, arson, lack of good public schools, sorry public transit - but alot of us are trying to make it better.
The last Census stated that Detroit had 110,000 white residents. There are alot of white residents in all of the historic districts with the big houses - Boston-Edison, Indian Village, The Rosedale Parks, East English Village, Sherwood Forest, University District, Palmer Woods, and such. There are alot of whites that live in the urban chic neighorhoods - Woodbridge, West Village, Corktown, Hubbard Farms. There are a lot of white people in the Dowtown, Midtown, and New Center Areas.
The Neighborhood that I live in is Warrendale, which was predominantly white up until the early 90's. There are still a lot of white folks over here - young and old. They live amongst the Negroes and hang out with them, and its ALL GOOD!!!
There are alot white folks in a few poorer neighborhoods like the shoddily built Brightmoor, and the foul-smelling Delray neighborhood in the Southwest corner of the city.
THESE WHITE FOLKS GENERALLY DON'T LIVE IN FEAR FOR THERE LIVES.

A lot of posts have been removed as personal attacks here, some were edited. Please, discuss the local issues only and you're welcome to move to the Politics / Controversies forum to debate race issues at large. Thank you.

Why? I'm a Michigan native. Born in Detroit, raised in Warren and know the areas well...

That is a white-trash sentiment. Warren??? Are you kidding me? The most cosmopolitan area in Metro Detroit is right around 14 Mile and Woodward. Royal Oak and Birmingham are the class of the field as far as livable communities with the kinds of amenities someone who's ever lived in a real city would demand.
If you get above 16 Mile the cultural dynamic changes rapidly and you'll soon find yourself amidst a sea of mullet-wearing red-necks with RedWings decals on the rear windows of their late 70's Camaros. The Bloomfields are an exception, but that's only because of their large Jewish populations. And even the Bloomfields are lifeless bedroom communities, where you have to drive to get anywhere or do anything.
East of I-75 is even worse. As far south as just north of 8 Mile, the very second that you traverse I-75 to the east, the gray aura of utter bleakness emanating from Macomb County begins to drain you of your life essence. The eastern suburbs are stygian places of almost unimaginable blue collar soul-sucking despair.

I live in Royal Oak, and find this opinion to be silly. I am starting this thread to see if this is indeed the general consensus, or instead a minority opinion. If you share the "stay above 16 Mile" opinion, I would be curious as to what personal experience has led you to that conclusion.
Discuss!

I live currently at 13 and vandyke. I do find it to be much less of a decent area than it was 5 - 10 years ago. I ABSOLUTELY agree that you should stay above sixteen mile in this area if you have a choice. The exception being Royal Oak. Downtown Royal Oak seems to be a nice place to live and my sister lived there for years until her large family outgrew the house. I am 28 and I have a 3 yr old and I am noticing less and less "friendly" people in Warren and surrounding areas. Also, with the bus line running up Van Dyke from Detroit there are more and more scruffy looking people wandering giving it a more urban and unsafe feel. Crime rates are definitely up in that area. I am not by any means a spoiled brat, but I am not an "urban" person either. As for your standard, overall, family values neighborhood, I think you can find it not too bad between 13 and 16 and much better above 16 mile. Anything below 13 is pretty crime ridden. I lived at 12 1/2 and Dequindre over a year ago and it was an aweful neighborhood. I was afraid to walk from my car to my apartment at night, and I am pretty good at the self defense stuff. My nieghbors had like 8 people living in a two bedroom apartment and my other neighbors were a family with three kids in a two bedroom. I could go on forever about this topic, but I'll stop here. Hope this helps.

Wow, sounds like you've never lived up here. I currently live in Macomb County, which I find to be just fine (as far as Michigan areas go) and I used to live in Oakland County (Royal Oak, Troy and Rochester). I can honestly say that I don't know one person with a mullet and there are very few "rednecks" in the suburbs. Maybe once you get out more to Romeo and such where all the farms are there are a few rednecks, but honestly I would rather live amongst the over friendly rednecks than live south of 696 with bars on my windows, afraid to leave my house after dark. We jokingly call Rochester Snobchester, and my sister now lives in Troy which seems to be just as elitist. Areas near Gratiot (roseville and easter clinton twp) are slightly dangerous and south of 696 is not worth the cheaper rent to even venture in any area.

I don't agree 100%, but this statement made me laugh. We needed a statement like this to balance all the outlandish live-south-of-14-Mile-at-your-own-risk diatribes.

I live off Ford Road, which is the 0 mile, so I guess I'm just lucky to be alive!
