I drove all over the Detroit area this past weekend and I'm still alive. I also was staying at my mom's house off of 11 Mile. This really scary thing happened where the neighbors came over and said hi and we talked for an hour.....
Oh man, I was running for my life...LOL!!reading this thread was entertaining....the only thing that comes to mind is the Dave Chappelle skit with the black-white supremacist |

I think it all depends on what you are looking for. I think that if some think that the areas below 16 mile are too crime ridden for them, so be it. I lived below 16 mile my whole life until 4 yrs ago, and never personally experienced any crime. I know people who did but I am sure everyone does. I did not move to get "above 16" (I am only at 17 so I guess I can expect some overflow of degenerates any day now. Doesn't matter my house wouldn't sell on a good day here at the moment) I moved because my life changed and I rolled with the changes. That is life. I mean if gay people wish to move to Royal Oak and Ferndale because it is openly accepted and there are places geared towards that-who cares? I don't blame them. If Arabs want to move to Dearborn because the community has alot to offer their culture-what's the big deal? Are they racist because they don't wish to move to gay-friendly Ferndale? Maybe it is not conducive to their family life. What is the big deal here? Go where you are comfortable. If people are forced to move where they don't want to be, you will see problems. I want to be in an area where things are nice. Yards are kept up, neighbors are friendly...I don't care if they are pea green, orange or purple. Just decent. It doesn't cost anything to pick up the garbage in your yard. Or to wave and smile. Even if you don't know the language. If the area (Detroit or otherwise)cannot maintain that kind of life, then I don't think I am wrong for wanting to not go there. I am not afraid to go downtown, I go often. But I don't wish to live there.
On my relatively small street, I have more diversity than I have ever had in Ferndale near 8 mile, in Hazel Park near 10 mile or in Royal Oak, Madison Heights, Oak Park, too. I live on a street with Africans, Arabs, Chinese, Whites, Indians and rednecks! Not a problem here. And wow! I am above 16!! Everyone is respectful, neat, clean and friendly. This is how it should be and if Detroit would be that way then I am sure you would see more diversity. It is not just about whites not wanting to move there because of blacks-it is about wanting a better life for yourself and your children. The schools are terrible in Detroit, heck when my kids went to school in HP, there were many black children because their parents didn't want them going to Detroit schools. I don't blame them. So, Jeffncandace or whomever else, I don't know if you have children, but it does change your outlook on life. Like it or not. Before I did, I was not worried about where I lived, where I went or who was hanging out with my group. Things change due to life changes. When I had kids, I stopped hanging in the bars and joined playgroups, moms clubs and such. In Hazel Park. Yes, there were rednecks, but I didn't care as much as I cared that they were parents. They understood. I know that it is not the same everywhere, I have felt the snobbery of some communities, but I just hold my head up and keep on going...ultimately they have to put their pants on the same way I do every morning (even if they bought them from Saks and mine were from JCPenney!) And now, I have raised my kids (youngest is 14) and I am feeling a little bit of freedom coming back. I am now going to move to Vegas for a REAL culture shock!!! (According to those boards, anyway) |

Troy and Rochester might be geographically within the borders of Oakland Country, but culturally they are have a lot more in common with their Skoal-Bandits-loving neighbors to the east. Ditto for Madison Hts. and Hazeltucky. The suggestion that Clinton Township, Roseville, Warren, Centerline, Mt. Clemons and all points north aren't lousy with Rednecks and assorted other varieties of white trash is absurd. If you want to observe them in their natural environment, go to Freedom Hill any weekend during the summer and count the number of big bellied/ skinny legged guys with those long wallets with chains attached to their belts. Addendum: My previous comment about Birmingham/Royal Oak/Ferndale corridor along Woodward being the most livable and cosmopolitan area in Metro Detroit did not consider Ann Arbor. If you include A2 in your definition of Metro Detroit, then it takes the cake. Last edited by hooperxxx; 05-15-2008 at 11:28 PM. |

At just about every festival (hamtramck, ribs fest downtown, you name it) I see big bellied/skinnied leg guys and gals. So, why is Freedom Hill any different? (I have never been there, btw)

Isn't metro Detroit ever going to get over this black/white thing? Honestly, it is embarrassing.
