I recommend Royal Oak. There are cheaper condos you can buy into right now. Plus, it's a buyer's market, so you can maybe get a deal?
I really think Berkley, which is nearby is on the up and up. It's close to Ferndale and Royal Oak, but a tiny bit cheaper.
I think Troy and Sterling Heights are kinda boring, but maybe that's just me

I live in Brooklyn now, but lived in Hamtramck for 2 years. I absolutley loved it! So many different kinds of people, everything in walking distance, includings cool bars. The polish food was great too. I miss that place.

My vote would be for Hamtramck. I really can't understand all the raves for Royal Oak. To me, it just seems like another suburb. It does have a downtown core to it which differentiates it a bit from other suburbs. But, Hamtramck seems to have more of an urban feel to it. Regardless of where you chose to live, your commute will be by car as the mass transit options in the Detroit area are non-existant.

I agree with the others; Royal Oak is nice for 20-somethings. The night-life is pretty fun and their are decent resturants. Beautiful new condos and townhouses. Sterling Heights is great for shopping and dining out. You can also live reasonably in Sterling Heights.
Warren in my opinion is pretty boring, so is Ferndale. I absolutley wouldn't even consider Hamtramck ~ but that's just my opinion. It's a small town in the middle of Detroit with old houses and shabby retail stores. Visit often to research these cities well.

Here are some pointers you listed bars/restuarants/nightlife/culture. Thats everything downtown detroit has to offer. Lets start with the bars there's the Centuar bar,Magic stick, Bookies, the Pulse and many more...We have fine dining like the Rattlesnake Club, (Seldom Blues one of the best french american cuisines on the riverfront) and the new Asian Village on Atwater & Beaubian behind the ren cen. Nightlife we the Majestic Theatre which is a hottest spot to hear different bands, the three casinos Motor City(which will be opening its hotel Nov.1.)Greektown...ohh I have to recommened it because you hear smooth jazz on the terrace its so beautiful at night you can over look the people at the bottom walking by... and just sit back and listen to the street music below and you fill like your in little Italy. The New MGM Grand is also an option. Now culture well you have everything in the Midtown area for that, the DIA one of the top museum in the country. The New Detroit Science where you can catch the Our Body exzibit. Its Real Human body Speciman, Detroit Historical Museum,African american museum, and the Motown Museum. I hope I covered enough for you to can and experience the beauty and architecture of our great city... See you there.

I agree on the first two recommendations - cross Novi off the list - the rush hour commute on 696 will kill you. i used to drive from novi/wixom to royal oak for work and that took about an hour in rush hour traffic. it wasn't fun, therefore, i don't recommend it.

Clawson
Clawson is the place to be! It is a fast-growing community with all the charm of Royal Oak without the high rent. It's also gaining a nice night crowd - there is a cool new brewery & a few other new restaurants downtown. You'll be very happy there or in Royal Oak. Royal Oak has a more exciting, walkable downtown full of shops, restaurants, bars & night life. Both are a short drive to Warren. My personal advice: don't live EOD (East of Dequindre).

Royal Oak is the place for you. Ann Arbor is more fun, but too far away. Ferndale or Hamtrammack are less fun and a bit rougher but cheaper.
