Most areas of Highland Park are actually worse than many neighborhoods in Detroit.

Historically, Highland Park has ALWAYS been very dependent on a single industry, even more so than Detroit. Ford basically built the community and then left, Chrysler built its world headquarters there until they moved to Auburn Hills in 1993. After Chrysler moved out of Highland Park the city lost a huge amount of tax revenue that they depended on for so many years and the city basically collapsed and fell into bankruptcy. For many years the city was run by the State of Michigan, and has just recently gotten its police force back. Highland Park's streets are just heartbreaking to drive through. The government buildings (city hall, police, etc), Library, and thousands of homes have been completely abandoned and left to rot. Highland Park had a nice commercial shopping district up until the late 1970's when it basically all fell apart from white flight and decentralization.

So to basically answer your question, I would not look into relocating to Highland Park, sadly it is no longer safe and there really is no future in sight for a city that is struggling badly with its schools and simple services.

bonezip,

If at this point Highland Park is all you've really got going; nothing to lose. Are you buying or squatting?

East of Hamilton is the more upscale part as opposed to west of Hamilton. Try to get near the southern Boston Edison section.

Walk the neighborhood and get to know the voters. Run for Mayor of Highland Park. Own it, baby.

I saw a quote on here once about Highland Park - "Craftsman style houses, felon style neighbors".

There's a small part of Highland Park that looks relatively classy, but even a block away you'll find unbelievable blight. Highland Park is much worse than Detroit and probably shouldn't even be somewhere to consider. There's a reason why they call it Hell-Land Park.

You are awesome.

What's up with Highland Park having a tent city for the US Social Forum by the way. I'm not sure that's going to end well. Although I suppose there's plenty of people used to living in tent-like conditions there so maybe it's not that much of a change.

My cousin's daughter is a teacher in one of the public elementaries in Highland Park and loves it. I'm glad she can see through the blight and crime and see the potential in those beautiful kids. Hopefully she may have a hand in helping some of them to move on to better things in the future.

Bonezip,

"I know what all 900 000 of Detroit ppl can't just live in slums"

Sure can. O/T - Are you from a glitzy place like Atlanta or Kansas City?

The D is the eyesore of the entire West. Basically, right now, Detroit is the homeless shelter of the Free World.

Come on over to The D. Find a Highland Park mansion you think you'll enjoy and move in. Squat for the summer. If you like the place, make an offer.

Submerse yourself in the culture.
