Default What oral diabetes drugs so you take?

I'm currently taking metformin, Januvia and glipizide. I haven't really achieved good control, unless I severely limit carbs, until the most recent addition of the glipizide.

My husband was on Metformin for 3 years. Thankfully he's off meds 6 months ago due to weight loss. He never had to take any other diabetic meds or insulin. Let's hope it stays that way for him. I guess some people who are are on several diabetic meds have diabetes type 1 or have it more sever than others? Just curious as to why some people are on more diabetic meds than others. My husbands friend (40 yrs old) is on 3meds. His last A1 C was 13. I told him he better get on the ball and watch what he eats. He loves sweets and carbs. My DH last A1C was 5.3

I a Diabetic II and take a 500 mg of Metformin twice a day, UNLESS I have a beer, wine or margarita at dinner........Metformin and alcohol don't mix (found that out the hard way with a bad stomach ache). My wife is a borderline Diabetic II, but doesn't take any med for it. We never use to look at the Nutritional Fact label on food packages, but sure do now! We stay away from lots of sodium (tv dinners, pot pies) and look at the quanity of sugar in the product. We don't use regular sugar anymore at all! I use 1 packet of Splenda and some Sugar Free Coffee Mate in my coffee in the AM and only have 1 cup a day. Back in the 80's, I use to put 4 or 5 teaspoons of sugar in my coffee in the AM. Now my coffee tastes GREAT w/using the Splenda and Sugar Free Coffee Mate.

We both could (ok, NEED) to lose around 20 pounds each, but being "early Seniors" in our early 60's, losing weight, getting enough exercise and eating better is a very, very ROUGH thing to accomplish.

None anymore.

I used to take Metformin 850 mg 2 times a day. I couldn't tolerate 1000 mgs 2 times a day - it gave me persistent diarrhea. Then I was taking glipizide (can't remember the dosage) with it. Finally, even that wasn't working effectively, so I was put on Lantus Solostar pen for a once a day shot of insulin.

On Dec. 20, 2010 I had bariatric surgery done: Gastric By-Pass Roux-en-Y procedure. A month later my blood sugars were so low my Endocrinologist took me off all diabetes meds. My Endo, who happens to be the Director of the prestigious Rodebaugh Diabetes Center of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, declared that my Type 2 Diabetes "was in remission." He warned me not to put on the weight I lost through surgery because the Diabetes could come back ... so it's not a magic bullet or a complete "cure".

I lost 70 pounds. I went down from 220 to my goal of 150. Right now I'm at 155, so I did actually put on a few pounds since Christmas ... so I have to work on that arduously.

It appears Metformin loses it's effectiveness over time.
