Default How were you diagnosed?

Diabetes symptoms are rather non specific. For those of you who have it, how did you start seeing doctors about your symptoms, and then were diagnosed? e.g. thirst, fatigue, weight loss... these wouldn't make me go to doctors.

title correction: How were you diagnosed.

Mine was out of the blue, during a routine blood test. I was not having any symptoms. I am overweight, so for many years I worried that I would be diagnosed with diabetes, but didn't expect it when it came. The doctor said he had some bad news, he said I have type 2 diabetes and would need to go on oral medication (I now also take Byetta injectable).

My annual blood tests kept rising for glucose and then finally I was diabetic. I had been warned for some yeas to be careful of my diet and I wasn't. My own damn fault!

My husband was diagnosed out of the blue during a routine physical for work. He is the only one in his family to have diabetes, he is not overweight by any means and eats well. My family has a strong history of diabetes, I am about 30 pounds overweight and I have never had an issue with my blood sugar and I eat better now that I have someone to cook for.

My long- time doctor had died so I needed to find a new doctor just to refill my blood pressure meds but kept putting it off, for months, until I was almost out of meds. In the meantime, I caught the flu and kept telling myself that my symptoms were just the flu hanging on and on because I'd been under a lot of stress because my dad died. I had extreme thirst, urination, weight loss and blurred vision.
When I could put it off no longer, I saw a new doc and expected to just get a physical and routine labs but my labs came back off the charts...my fasting blood glucose was 444 and my A1c was unbelievable at 17.1.

I was sent immediately to an Endo, who ran further labs and diagnosed me with Type2 and started me on meds.

Happy to say that three years later my A1c is 5.8, my vision has cleared and other symptoms gone. I did it through diet, exercise, metformin and Janumet.

I don't have diabetes, just risk factors for it (thick waist, need to lose weight). I have IR, a condition that precedes diabetes, but my BS levels are still o.k. I just need to really watch what I'm eating (limit carbs/calories), lose more weight and make sure that I exercise..... and hope for the best.

My husband was diagnosed when he was 7 (he is 35 now) but he was not diagnosed until he fell into a coma and was rushed to the hospital. His mom says that his blood sugar was well over 500 when they finally figured out what was going on with him.

I was diagnosed when i was 50,the main symptom i went to the doctor for was blurry vision after asking me if i was thirsty all the time and if i tended to have frequent urination to which i replied in the affirmative that was enough for him to send me off for a blood test, the following week on the followup i got the news i was diabetic.

Like Southern Belle -- my doctor saw it coming down the pike, and I was tested regularly for it. And it showed up.

But my mother was diagnosed with it in her 70's (controlled by diet till she died), and I'm pretty sure my father and grandmother had it (undiagnosed -- and they died at 57 and 63) and my uncle (brother to Daddy) has it, too.

I think the medical field lowered the numbers to where more people are being diagnosed earlier, and that's saving lives.

Let's see my Husband was diagnosed through routine blood work in 2008. He takes thyroid medication and every 3-4 months he would get a full blood workup to check is thyroid levels. He was boderline before 2008 but then in 2008 it was confirmed he did have type 2 diabetes. He was 35 then. Thankfully through Helathy eating habits and a big weight loss he has been off meds for almost 1 year. My uncle was diagnosed at age 9, this was back in the late 50's early 60's. My great Uncle had diabetes and he saw some signs that my uncle may have it so he had him do a urine stick test and sure enough he was diabetic. He ended up going to a doctor a few days later who also confimred it was Juvinille diabetes, Sadly he died at the age of 57 due to diabetic complications. He basically went into a diabetic coma, he was also a double amputee.
