I have a suspicion that I might have diabetes and I want to get it checked out today, but I didn't get enough sleep this past night. I have an appointment later today for a different issue and I had planned on asking the doctor if he can check for diabetes. Would it be a better idea if I had it checked on a day where I had a better sleep the night before, in case the lack of sleep affected my blood sugar? Does it make a big difference?

Not in my experience. I often have poor night's sleep, but it does not seem to affect my morning blood sugar level. Illness does, but not lack of sleep.

Be sure to recall what and when you ate before the doctor checks your 'instant' glucose level (i.e., "I had scrambled eggs and toast two hours ago, doc."

You have to fast first - no food for 12 hours.

You can test yourself by purchasing kits at wally world or on amazon. You don't really have to fast first... fasting blood sugar is the last to fail in type 2 diabetes... post meal blood sugar is an earlier indicator of problems... you should not be spiking much above 150 mg/dl at any time after a meal. Best time to check.. 1 hour after a meal and again at 2 hours. People who have post meal blood sugar spikes should take preactive action to make sure you regulate these spikes otherwise your prediabetic condition will deteriorate to type 2 diabetes faster. Type 2 diabetes is largely a disease of excess carb consumption.. part of the modern age. Type 1 is genetic...

Poor sleep does affect my AM blood sugar. I'm in menopause and I often wake up at 4 or 5 and stay awake for an hour or so dozing here and there before falling back to deep sleep. If I get up and check my sugar it will be normal (and I will assured that I will just stay awake...) but if I check after the second deep sleep, my BG will be 140's.... My doctor concluded that's the way I am -- there's a name for it...

Well I didn't get the chance to see the doctor the other day. I actually only had an X-ray planned with another specialist for my pneumonia and was told the doctor would call if there was a problem.

I still have a suspicion that I could have diabetes. I've been needing to urine alot more, even right after I leave the washroom and had just finished urinating. I need to drink 12 glasses of water on days that I work at my physically active job, so I can sleep well at night, but I can stick to my usual 8 on the weekends.

On days that I didn't sleep well the night before, I feel numbness at random times during the day on my hands and feet. But I never feel numbness on the days that I did sleep well the night before. But I suppose that could be related to my lack of sleep, which I'm working on avoiding.

I'm 23 years old and am obese, with a BMI between 30 and 40. My mother was diagnosed with diabetes in her late 40s. So if I got it, is it considered genetic if I was born when she didn't have it yet?

Also, 2 years ago I was referred to a neuro-ophtalmologist after a doctor looked into my eyes with his light and said there was something about the nerve system that I should get checked out. After doing some research, I found out that this could be related to diabetes. I put getting this checked out on hold so I can work on other personal goals, but I gave the referral to the neuro-ophtalmologist and they should be making an appointment for me soon.

Based on what I described, does it sound like I have diabetes? I am working on losing weight and reducing carbs at the moment.

Don't waste any time -- call your doctor -- it's a simple blood test that you can take anytime. Your symptoms could be anything...

From your description it sounds like you have some pre diabetic symptoms,Thirst/frequent urination/obesity/vision issues.Your doc will ask you some questions and send you for a blood test before making a positive diagnosis.Your lack of sleep would have little to no effect on your overall blood sugar level.

I'm drinking more even though I don't feel thirsty, so I don't know if that counts as "thirst". And I don't have any trouble with my vision, just the possible nerve change that I was told about.

Anyway, I'm going to look into getting a family doctor this weekend so I can make an appointment to get checked.
