Does anyone else with Diabetes also have Thyroid disease and if so are you finding if u have one ailment the other seems to follow. I have had diabetes since my 20's, I was never the classic type we are told that develops the ailment, overweight or being inactive, that was never me, I was told it was bad genes, both parents were diabetics. My mother also had the thryoid problem after developing diabetes, I also had the exact same problem, developing thyroid disease although not for 20 years after the diabetes, so it could be just bad luck. Just curious if anyone else has both ailments, and if so did or do your parents, and it just seems to follow into each generation.

It's not luck. Sounds like you have Type I Diabetes which is often referred to as Juvenile Diabetes. This is a genetic condition that originates in the Endocrine System, the same system that regulates Thyroid. That's why people often have both problems.

Default thanks

Yes, your correct, Thankfully I manage both conditions very well, and I am 57 now, I plan on managing them for a long time to come. Hope to hear from anyone who also deals with this, and how and what they do to keep their health in check. Thanks

I don't have either...had a thyroid problem a few years ago but my wonderful endocrinologist worked me through that and in 1 1/2 years I was normal again. She's now treating my husband who is diabetic. So...I just want to know if you're under the care of an endocrinologist? If not, please make an appointment! They are so much more well versed in these diseases than your primary care or family doc. Stay healthy!

Thank you for the reply. No I have never seen an endocrinologist. I have always been treated by Internists, and there have been times I felt it was not the best care, especially if I have had to change doctors when moving. I have found doctors can treat both diseases quite differently from one to the other doctor. I however have my aic diabetes lab test done twice a year, and I monitor myself daily on that, My thyroid test is done once a year. I have always been under good control on both of these. Seeing a endo doctor is a good idea, and I agree I should be seeing one, its a shame that our doctors never steer us to a specialist, when we deal with this year after year. I currently have no problems managing this, my lab results are always very good. I hope your husband does well, and you have no future thyroid problems.

My mother had the thyroid problems first, since her 20's and then in her 40's developed diabetes. Her mother, my grandmother, had the diabetes but never any problems with the thyroid. I have diabetes II but don't have any problem with the thyroid(As of todaY???)
I started seeing an endocrinologist when I started with the diabetes for a while, then after I moved to FLA I have not seen any again. I just go the internal medicine physician and he deals with the diabetes meds and the lab tests. Perhaps it is a good idea to start seeing an endocrinologist again. It is just that you get so tired of all the meds and conditions you get with diabetes....

On another thread not long ago I said the reason my husband started seeing an endocrinologist was because the family doc was going to put him on insulin. I rebelled and immediately called the endocrinologist -- in hindsight we should have done this when he was first diagnosed. She reviewed everything, got all the lab tests done, and changed his medications. It's been about 2 years now since he's been seeing her and he's recently been taken off one of his meds on a trial basis because he was doing so well. If he had been seeing her all along, maybe he would have avoided the cardiac problems -- he now has something like 5 or 6 stents. Of course that's another recent controversy, but with a 95% blockage, I'm glad he had it done! His cardiologist told me it was due to the diabetes. He's doing great now with all his conditions!

I guess all of us should see the endo doctor, Im glad everyone seems to be doing well with their treatments. Does anyone take glyburide for their diabetes, or levothyroxine for the thyroid condition. I had at one time been on glucophage, but it made me so sick, I had to be taken off of it. I seem to tolerate glyburide very well, and it has really helped with my sugar levels. I am not completely sure though, if it causes a weight gain, and a tired feeling at times though. I am very active physically my entire life, and I noticed I gained about 7 lbs in the first 2 months of taking this pill. Since I lift weights and do cardio up to about 25 miles a week, and have for years, I found it strange I gained 7 lbs in 2 months.

Yes all the treatments the meds, the insulin the testing everything is rather draining, I can understand your feelings on that, but what else can we do, we know what happens if we don't do all of this stuff. It could always be worse thats how I look at it.
