I don't go along with the genetic theory...I'm convinced it's junk diet = junk health...kids are eating a snack food, soda, and high fructose corn syrup diet starting as toddlers and getting sicker earlier...especially coupled with our increasingly sedentary lifestyle...

Religious practices in the U.S.-- such as the Mormons and the Jehovah's Witnesses--who practice healthy diets have far fewer childhood and adult "Western diseases" such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and cancers...

Maybe if your daughter could read some articles about diabetes and all the consequences thereof, she would learn to say no...or better yet, "instead of". Sure it will take some getting used to, but it's better than dealing with later heart disease, kidney failure, perhaps blindness or losing a leg. And your little granddaughter should maybe get more outside exercise -- running around playing can keep kids in better shape. Or swimming is great...maybe the family could join the Y...

My suspicions to the cause of this early diabetes is the high fructose corm syrup that's now being put into most of the foods we eat...it's synthesized in the body differently than cane or beet sugar, leading to, some scientists believe, diabetes.
There's more to it than that, though. A study I read about in the Cleveland Plain Dealer explains that the extreme rates of Type 2 are showing up in exactly the same places where we have the most PCB contamination -- Michigan and Ohio being prominent examples. It may be causing the chronic systemic inflammation that predisposes people to Type 2. Not that living on deep-fried cheese sticks washed down with Pepsi helps!

My daughter KNOWS. She is in the medical field. She is aware of the consequences, but her kids are spoiled. She is working on sneaking vegetables into different foods and is cutting down on the candy and chips and cheese salsa. GD is built like her dad.
