I was hyperthyroid and had to have a total thyroidectomy 2 years ago, now I am hypo... Then I gained 55 pounds post surgery since my meds were a mess! I've always eaten healthy due to a mom who was a nurse and a dad who was a cardiac patient since I was 6 years old. I grew up with an exceptionally healthy diet and so I don't really like junk in the first place.
Still tweaking the meds as we speak but am feeling closest to normal than ever.
Got pissed at Endo. (not really his fault since I was never on meds, ever try hitting a moving target in the dark?)
so anyway I whined and moaned about the weight gain, and he sent me to a Doc. who is technically a kidney specialist and he supervised my protein sparing metabolic diet.
NO HCG that stuff is BS! DON'T do it!!!! it's like flushing your money down the toilet.

Anyway so here's my success story:
I'm 5'6"
sept 13 I weighed 190 !! (ACK!)
today I weigh 135! (back to my pre Thyroid Disease weight! YAY! I highly recommend a proper medical supervised program.
feel free to PM me for more details and info.

Great post!! Thanks for sharing! Just wanted to add.. Money should not be the reason not to do HCG sh*t, but: LESS CALORIES YOU EAT LESS T3 YOUR THYROID IS PRODUSING. 500 Cal diet will shut your thyroid functions off completely. Don't do it!

That's what was happening to me before I was diagnosed. It was the most frustrating thing, but I was playing with the same 3-4 pounds every week it seemed. I'd lose it and then it would creep back on.

If you following a diet and exercise plan conducive to losing weight, you may need your meds increased if you are hypo.
Yep- I am hypo and doc is still trying to get my dosage right. I think I may need to buy a wig soon though from all the hair loss

1450calories, Insanity 5-6 days a week and still struggling to lose weight. I hate it

Same here, still playing with dosage. I was just increased to 100 and started it today.

After my son was born I lost 80lbs....gained about 20 back in the last two years, which I think was due to being hypo. I lost those 20lbs but since then I'm on a plateau (this is the 5th week).

I've been doing p90x and watching everything I put in my mouth so I know how frustrated you are!

I will say that losing my hair wasn't so bad for me, it was kind of welcome...LOL. My hair strands are thin, but I have LOTS and LOTS of them. What bothered me the most was the eyelashes. I had bald spots that could not be covered up and when I put mascara on it made it look worse. The eyebrows were bad too because if I plucked them, I'd only have half an eyebrow left! lol

The eyelashes are almost back to normal and the eyebrows are for the most part. I'm still losing head hair but it's not as bad as it was.

I am also hypo. Testing shows that my thyroid is barely hanging on by a thread, but my doctor is reluctant to put me on meds just yet but still wants me to lost weight. Is that frustrating or what? My vitamin D levels were also VERY low, but I am working on upping those with a prescription dosage and will be tested again, along with my thyroid and the usual stuff.

I wasn't mentally prepared to succeed with weight loss (lifestyle change NOT diet) until just recently. Once I got my mind in the right place, I rejoined Weight Watchers because I need the accountability and support, and it's a program that makes sense to me and gets the thumbs up from my doctor. It may take me longer than some people, but I am determined to do my best, and I am already starting to lose, which is giving me hope.

Did they test your TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and antibodies? Did they happen to tell you what your levels were? Sometimes they have to go by outward symptoms along with the numbers. Did they do an ultrasound of your thyroid? I have a goiter (I hate that word, makes it sound like I have some big knobby growth...lol). My thyroid is pretty enlarged so my doc wants to get me as close to hyper without actually crossing that line so the thyroid doesn't get any larger.

My Vit. D was also very low. I was on 50,000iu once a week for 8 weeks. Thought I was done with it but at my last check the numbers weren't where they were supposed to be still. Now I'm on that same dose twice a week.

I also go to WW. I do like the points program but I confess that I'm horrible at counting points, although at this point I can take a quick glance of my food diary and know if I'm under or over points. I go mainly for the support and accountability.

Good luck to you! It's a struggle when your body is working against you!

Your case sounds a lot like mine,JUSTHE6OFUS!!!
Very low Vitamin D, so low my doc has me on 50,000 IU daily for 30 days and then w'll see if that needs re-adjusting. I am also on synthroid 125 mcg.
Are you having success losing any weight??
I eat right, no breads, pastas, watch my carb intake and try to eat as much organic food as I can!
I was just diagnosed this week and start my second day on these meds tomorrow. I will say that the Synthroid was amazing today!! No brain fog and felt 20 years younger!!

Hey there,

I lost the 20lbs I gained pretty quickly once I started the meds.

I hit a plateau a few weeks ago and I think I finally broke through. I'm down to 153 which isn't a big loss but it's better than being stuck around 156-157.

The brain fog was the WORST. It's nice to actually live on planet earth...lol. My husband has noticed a HUGE difference in me as well...he said I used to be a watered down version of who I really am.

Another big change I noticed was my skin. It used to be thick, dry and rough and now it's so soft! Sometimes I can't stop touching my own face, arms or legs My friend said I glow now

It amazes me that I didn't really notice the negative changes that happen with hypo, but then come on so slowly that I guess I just got used to feeling and looking like crap.

Hi, I'm brand new on here, but my wife was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism earlier today, so I wanna throw in my 2 cents just in case it can help. My thoughts are that if the weight gain is caused by a low metabolism, and even possible malnutrition (anorexic ppl are at risk of hypothyroidism because of that), a healthy diet, rich in micronutrients (carbs, protein, and fat), macronutrients (vitamins and minerals), and phytonutrients (found in antioxidant rich foods ... over 30,000 compounds have been identified to date) would ensure proper nutrition, and in theory it could possibly reverse the condition itself over time. But, that's just theory, so along with the diet that everyone needs for healthy weight loss, I think I'd recommend an all-natural supplement designed to increase metabolism and help your body remove toxins. I actually sell a weight management system that has all that, but I won't name it or post any links to any sites, I'm just trying to help by offering a solution and I'd recommend ANY healthy and natural product that's proven to increase metabolism and proven to work on belly fat (the most dangerous fat ... blocks intake of insulin to the organs, making ppl diabetic. Also puts pressure on organs like kidneys and causes other problems). I'm just concerned for my wife ... I hear a lot about thyroid problems (I know at least 5 ppl with either hypo or hyper), and I'm educating myself as much as possible on this because I HATE prescription drugs and their effects (er, uh, side effects), and I absolutely HATE the thought of possible radiation treatment. I'll keep you posted on how she's doing and if the good nutrition and metabolism/detox boost does what I expect it to.

I get those checked at each visit.

I was diagnosed in Sept. with hypo and I'm still being adjusted for meds. they like to increase it gradually so you don't experience extreme side-effects.

I started at 50, then 75 and today I was adjusted to 100. I had a feeling they'd adjust me again. My body said "yippee!!!" for the first dose they put me on...because it was better than what my own body was doing.

Then after 4 weeks I started not feeling as fantastic and at my 6 week they adjusted based on levels. Again, I went through that "yippee!" stage where I felt great but then once I got used to the increase I could feel at 4 weeks that I wasn't feeling as great as I thought, it was just better than it was. After 4 weeks on 75 I knew I'd need another increase because of the way I felt. Hopefully I will stabalize soon but it has been a long process! You won't feel fantastic overnight, and possibly not for few months. Be patient though and stick to a good diet and exercise plan.
You mean they didn't start you on 25mg~? Why did they increase your dosage~?
