Not all foods cause your blood sugar to spike. If it doesn't spike in the first place, it won't plummet, and then you won't have as much of an urge to eat again only a couple hours later. Just sayin'...

MANUEL URIBE would die obese if he starved himself. The body when you are obese ravages MUSCLE, ORGAN, BRAIN TISSUE LOOONG BEFORE FAT.

NEITHER dieting nor exercoise effectively treats OR cures obesity.

it is MUCH MORE COMPLICATED that that.

Science does NOT even understand all of the NUMEROUS tricks your body has to maintaining its fat and weight, especially in the morbidly obese .

Even in a normal person calorie deprivation causes WATER LOSS FIRST, MUSCLE LOSS NEXT, and way last fat tissue.

Obesity has co existed with EXTREME POVERTY and extreme MALNUTRITION

lastly, Manuel uribe's response to starvation is A LOT different than that of a kid who was never obese.

oBESITY IS AS GENETIC AS HEIGHT.

Rick Santos you keep posting this untrue drivel that is quite frankly harmful to those who are gullible and looking for excuses not to eat right or exercise.
Can you please list your qualifications that make you such an 'expert' on this subject?
Otherwise can you please reign in your erroneous statements?

You could do weight watchers. Starving yourself and being diabetic??? Not good at all. Are your sugars high, or low? Diabetics should not starve themselves. 4 hours a day exercising seems extreme to me. I'd say maybe an hour a day. Your body needs food for energy. Are you eating protein, fruits or veggies? Are you drinking water? I surely hope you are not on insulin because you can bottom out big time if you are starving yourself or not eating enough. I know this from several family member who are diabetic, my hubby included. You are going to end up in the emergency room, if you haven't already. I say eat smaller meals more often during the day. There are other options other than weight loss surgery and even people who are poor can do something about their weight. Starving yourself is not the only way out.

I hope you have since made some modifications.

How about a new pattern, in case your body has gotten used to your current path.

1700 calories. How about: 30 minutes of cardio intervals for 4 days a week? And 30 minutes of strength training for another 4 days a week. And 60 minutes of cardio for 2 days a week? Monitor for a month or 2....and see if the change triggers changes.

500 calories a day isn't healthy or sustainable for anyone.

You should also see your doctor to discuss your concerns and see if he or she can refer you to a specialist: a nutritionist and more. It sounds like you may also be battling depression.

lots of good posts in this thread.

I like the mind-thought of your metabolism acts as your body's furnace- you fuel the body with good foods, you up your metabolism and lose weight- particularly if combined with exercise

dieting/lifestyle choices, is a head game too, most folks need to cut themselves some slack, because if you do a radical diet change- you might have the best intentions, but your body and mind, are screaming at you (wtf are you doing?)
because
thru many years, we used food as a reward, as a crutch, as a selfish escape-there's a reason for the phrase comfort food.

I recently started a diet- one ive been putting together for a while and researched, something i can do, not setting myself up to fail-this is important.

essentially, I cut out the sweets (not easy, i love sweets), im eating mostly fruits and veggies throughout the day, and eating cans of tuna fish 2-3 per day, right from the can (I read a few years ago, tuna fish was one of the best protein sources, and lowest fat.
Also im eating baby spinach right from the bag (after a wash) and broccoli raw- this isnt easy either, havent been a big veggie eater-I love those little fruit cups in the grocery stores produce sections-this satisfies my sweet tooth and gives me anti-oxidents (blackberries and blue-berries)
eating apples, bananas, oranges, any fruit is better than any pastry, donut, etc.
I think with any radical change, your body gets pissed, it wants that donut- thats why we never feel "full" or feel fatigued, extremely tired, etc.
in these times, I make a smoothie-throw orange juice, baby carrots, a banana, frozen blueberries/blackberries into a blender, and sometimes top it off with non fat whipped cream-good stuff!
I drive alot in my work-so i bring jugs of water with me
and I drink coffee-this is a good appetite supressant.
Ive also joined a gym, and working with weights and cardio.

I live with someone thats a great cook, she still makes cookies, etc, but Im taking ownership in this, it's up to me to avoid temptations. I feel better about the accomplishment not to yield to temptation- much like not smoking, after you quit.

I dont believe starving yourself is very healthy- you need to fuel your body, just pick foods that are decent fuel-also like one person said-switch the routine up, make sure you sweat at least 4 days a week,,...on a treadmill, or using stretch/resistant bands

I would suggest cutting back on the tuna. You can use lean beef or chicken instead.

The mercury content of tuna is fairly high. See here:

About.com: http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/tuna.asp

For someone who weighs 150 pounds or more, the suggested limit is one can of albacore every 9 days or one can of chunk light tuna every 3 days.
