Hell, walking slow does, if you do it for long enough. Of course if you walk 1 1/2 hours a day, you might have to sacrifice Dancing With the Stars or Glee or whatever, so it's a non-starter for most people.
I walk quite a bit, try to do 3 miles/day min. In the summer (more daylight) its longer/further. Yes, it does scrafice some time to do this, but its not a big deal for me.
Not really sure about the health benefit. I dont think it really helps in losing weight that much. Maybe more a psychological benefit, of being outside and in touch with the seaons and weather and natural light, etc.
For my work I have to walk a 1.25 mile circuit 4x a day (outside). It's fun and I enjoy it, but I sure haven't lost any weight in the year I've been doing this. Plus, I tripped on a walnut and fractured my left foot (yes, I really did!).
I've seen lots of people undergo amazing transformations and 9 times out of 10 they've accomplished their results through a combination of diet and walking.
Sure, it's always a matter of combining diet and exercise. I have a friend who lost 85 pounds last year just by going off chocolate and taking up tennis.
For me, I think I've weighed exactly the same thing since, ummm - about 1990? I've always walked a lot, but life without chocolate would just be sad!

In the summer I average walking 9 hours per week and I agree it doesn't help with weight that much. I still have to closely watch what I eat. I only walk about 3 mph because that's what I enjoy. If I made myself walk 4 or 5 mph I'd end up hating it and then I wouldn't do it. Enjoying what I'm doing is the key for me to keep doing something.

Me three!
I started a job a few years ago, added 3 mile daily walking commute and gained 10 or 15 pounds. The only difference in my calorie consumption was I added 1-2 more lattes a week (and I drink them black so they aren't full of calories) -- so they should have easily been covered by one day of walking, no matter the pace.
