I live in Denver (over half the state's population lives in the Denver metro area) and I definitely notice how many more obese people there are when traveling to the South or Midwest. I don't know why, but Colorado is definitely a "thin" state when compared to others.

Colorado attracts people who place a high value on staying thin. All the people I know in Chicago who want to move to Colorado are the triathlon or marathon or Crossfit type.

I think,or have a strange inkling, that they are talking about soul food, not necessarily southern food, even though soul food is a type of southern food.

Possibly. I don't know of a single white person that eats chitterlings (aka chitlins) or pickled pigs feet, yet many black people still do.

I once heard someone mentioning that sometimes corn kernels are found in the chitterling buckets. Gross! Where's the barf button!

I'm pretty sure Dr. Judd knew precisely what she was talking about when she referred to it as "Southern Food"

Here is a pretty detailed article about the study:

American Stroke Association report shows Southern diet could raise your risk of stroke » Clarksville, TN Online

Quote:
In the first large-scale study on the relationship between Southern foods and stroke, researchers characterized a Southern diet by a high intake of foods such as fried chicken, fried fish, fried potatoes, bacon, ham, liver and gizzards, and sugary drinks such as sweet tea. In addition to being high in fat, fried foods tend to be heavily salted.

According to the below article, black people are much more likely to eat Southern foods.

African-Americans are five times more likely to eat Southern foods, which may help explain their higher stroke risk.

I will tell you what I see here I Ky as far as diet is concerned. I lived my whole life in So. California until 4 1/2 years ago. I now live in an area where people are thin and exercise and shop at Whole Foods and local farm stores and farmers markets that exclusively sell fresh organic produce, dairy and grass fed beef, etc. However when we travel outside of this area into the more rural areas of Kentucky, Indiana and TN, biscuits and fried chicken, gravy and mashed potatoes are what you find at the fast food restaurants, gas station stores and restaurants. It is almost impossible to find healthy food in restaurants in the rural areas. This is also where you are most likely to find severely obese people....but not everyone is obese....some are normal weight or quite thin.

the normal and quite thin ones in the rural areas are not eating their calories. They are drinking them if you get the point. How many times do I see the alcoholic man and the huge heavy women in a relationship. A lot!

You are right - and lots of the younger men are incredibly thin. There are major drug and alcohol problems in the rural/poor south....I do feel for those people - so many of them are really decent at heart but many don't ever reach their potential. Often they don't read. I know this because I do a lot of volunteer work and part of my work takes me to some of the rural areas where I encounter many who can't read...imagine not being able to read! How does anyone ever pull themselves out of their reduced circumstances if they can't read - the problem is generational and very sad.
