I started using fitness pal a week ago. I have it set to 1200 cal a day but I didn't change the carb/protein daily intake. Should I do that or just worry about the calories.
I use Spark People, which does the same thing. On Spark, when you change your calories, it automatically changes your protein and carb requirements.
I've found that it works better for me to have a range of calories to stick to, because I'm more likely to succeed if I don't have that one absolute set number.

I love myfitnesspal. I started using it 3 months ago and have lost 25 pounds, pretty easily, but I've made some adjustments to their recommendations.
1200 was too low for me - I had trouble sticking to that limit and after a few weeks of always going over, adjusted it to 1300. Still a problem. I now keep my intake to around 1400 calories a day and find it works for me. I'm able to stick to that range and still lose weight.
I recommend this video (as well as ALL his videos) to learn about setting your macros (the protein, carbs, etc.). He is a regular contributor to myfitnesspal, and has lost over 100 lbs. The videos are a wealth of information and common sense.
This one in particular should clear up your questions about the protein/carb intake. Good luck!
