I have read this thread from beginning to end, what a wealth of information! Thank you all so much for contributing. I am again trying to lose weight and start an exercise routine, I have be yo-yo dieting for 50 years.

I had 2 other items that I donated to the Thanksgiving food collection box.
I lost 75 pounds on Nutrisystem 30 years ago and kept it off for a long time, probably 20 years. Back then there were NS offices in strip malls. You would go once a week, pick up your weekly food, get weighted, see a nutritionist and then have an hour group meeting. The food back then was pretty good and their approach worked. If you didn't like a food, you were able to take it back and pick something else out. They did teach you portion control and did support exercise. I unfortunately put some weight back on and tried NS again about 7 years ago, this time there was only the website for support and you had to buy a months worth of food, and honestly, the food was bad!! Or maybe it was the food I choose? Whatever, they said you could return it and get something else, but who wanted to deal with sending it back through the mail? I had a hard sell when I wanted to quit after a month, they get you in like a book or record club (remember those?) they send you food if you don't do anything on their website to cancel the order. Too bad it's not like it was 30 years ago, I would try it again. I guess they can make more $$$ today without having to have storefronts, counselors, etc.

Yes, that was the thing I enjoyed all those years ago. I only had to shop for fresh veggies and milk and the main parts of the meal were easy to prepare. I still do not like to cook or bake.

This is something I don't understand. I traveled with my job for 20 years, in the last 5 we were encouraged to go to dinner because this was when we had status meeting. Of course the project managers picked the fanciest restaurants around. I was probably eating 3000-4000 calories a day then (I'm old and female) and in the last 5-6 years I have gained 50 pounds. I stopped traveling about 6 months ago and have been eating 1400-1600 most days and have not lost much weight. I am now keeping a journal and trying to stay at 1200, I'm hungry.

I admire you so much! I can't wait to start the exercise and feel better! It is a bit harder to go at 60, but I feel I'm a young 60 and I have to get back in shape. I need to feel better about myself!

I'm looking forward to hitting that BMI square in the normal zone bull's eye quite soon! And even better, I'm looking forward to regaining my somewhat impaired self-confidence in meeting and dating women! Hah! I had an ulterior motive all along! But of course the health benefits are the real gain. It's just the icing on the cake with the improved mood and self-confidence! And I'm also relieved that I have made a major lifestyle choice that is very likely to lead me to a longer, more active life!
I admire you too! Wow, I can't wait until I can come on here and say the same! Please keep posing and encouraging me!!

Welcome to the topic Sany. You have more patience than I to have read the entire topic. However I've enjoyed it since I started several pages back. I've benefited from what I've read and contributed what I had.

Yes yo-yo dieting appears to be bad for you. That was mentioned recently. And I can only imagine what it does to the skin, can't be good.

You've read the topic, you know that the message is a healthy diet combined with a reasonable exercise program. Now all you have to do is determine how much of each is right for you. I snuck up on it and just kept reducing my food intake—but eating good wholesome foods made from fresh ingredients, and a minimal use of packaged food, sometimes necessary when I'm just too tired to cook. But even then I chose reasonable meal sizes, and my favorite munchies are vegetables. The only bad part is my dip which is just a typical supermarket salad dressing, blue cheese flavor. I can't imagine gaining weight munching green onions, mushrooms, even raw asparagus could be harmful. I'll throw in a few pieces of cheese and maybe a few peanuts, but only a small amount.

I've recently added in my exercise program, starting with a few short walks around my neighborhood, and then thinking hell, I have a gym membership, let's head for the gym! Since then I've been increasing days, increasing distance on the treadmill, adding machines, adding reps. I hurt but in a good way. I particularly like the way the ab cruncher hurts my belly. To me the hurt means I must be adding muscle tissue.

I'll admit your story is puzzling. I checked and PS is right, eat 3,500 calories of food and you will gain one pound. Google says so. That explains your gain, but not your lack of loss when you quit eating all that food. I'm not sure I have your full story.

If you are eating 1,200 and hungry, are you getting exercise? If not, add calories and add exercise.

I regret that the issues are far more serious for women because of their inability to add large amounts of muscle tissue like men can. I'd like to explore this more even though I'm a man but as I've said I enjoy learning things for the mere sake of learning. Of course the reasons for this are absolutely obvious: testosterone vs. estrogen, but are there ways that women can alter their BMR (metabolism)? -- I don't know.

Thank you so much! Remember I started 8+ months ago and lost about 35 pounds before I joined the topic (now 40), and recently resumed exercising at the gym, so it takes perseverance. I'm sure though that anybody who wants to and is willing to make the effort can not only adopt a healthful lifestyle and live a better quality life, but can also achieve a healthy weight too! It takes work but it's worth it!

the only two times i went to a buffet was at a family celebration, so we all went to the buffet. I however, decided what food i could eat and got that. it was a whole plateful of good healthy food, actually on the plate there were lot of empty space between the food - i.e. asparagus, a bit of meat, salad, olives, tomatos, and not overloaded. but even when i was controlling my food, i could only eat one full plate of food at the buffet. Not two or three just because it is free food.

One annoying memory at the buffet was these 3 women who loaded up a 12 inch high stack of ribs, they would not even let me and my bff get one rib. They happened to sit at a table across from us and they had this huge stack of ribs, and this was i guess so that they didn't have to make more than one trip to the buffet. but the buffet brought more .. in the meantime we couldn't even get one or two ribs because these idiots were hogging it all. That is ridiculous of them.

and no, i would not go to this one Horseshoe Casino in northwest Indiana, they have the best buffet there, but the cake and stuff would be too hard to pass up. so i haven't dared go there recently.

She had her son with her who I would say was about 14-years-old and he must have weighed 200lbs.
Her final bill came to $96 dollars - there wasn't a single piece of vegetable or fruit among what she'd bought and virtually everything was food which didn't need any preparation other than opening a packet.
I guestimated 75% of the people in the store were obese.
There just doesn't seem to be a lot of shame about being fat in America these days.
And yet, stupid Americans blame it on "genetics".

"The reason why I'm fat, AND my kids are fat is due to genetics". Not because they eat the exact same diet I've been eating all this time. It's the darn Genes! I'm not lazy, it's not what I eat. It's in the genes. NY times said so!

I guess it goes without saying, but just for the record most obesity has nothing to do with genetics or other debilities or illness. Most obesity is simply caused by eating more calories than they expend. Pure and simple, 3,500 calories = 1 pound per day. 335,000 calories = 100 pounds.

Hey, who gives a crap what the Kardashians are doing, they don't give a crap about YOU, there's a life outside of that little screen people, nature, hiking trails, fresh air, things that are real. Get your noses out of your phones and into life. Maybe you'll lose a pound or two and stop having to use the motorized shopping carts at Wal-mart, or having to file for disability because your butt can't make it to a daily job. Our society today for the most part is absolutely pitiful health wise. Pitiful, and pathetic.

In all fairness, my having my nose buried in my phone playing WWFs while waiting in line has nothing to do with my vegetarian diet, working out 5 days a week, or my hobbies of biking, hiking and paddle boarding.

You can live perfectly fine with only one hand. Just think of how challenging all your sports interests would be more challenging.

Myself, with my writing (typing, but hoping more than mere typing) and my art (traditional not mouse), I'm not willing to make the sacrifice yet.

Although Leonardo did sacrifice his ear, or so I hear (not that he heard)...
