For those of you who became extremely obese - how did you get there? (lose weight, 2015)

There is nothing unhealthy about chicken thighs, including the skin. There is nothing wrong with a big ole burger either (sans bread). There is virtually zero evidence that a low fat diet is superior to any other sort of diet.
But there IS evidence that a high-fat diet is unhealthy. So IF she is going for weight loss AND IF she wants that weight loss to be a healthy experience, THEN she will choose not to go HIGH fat. That means - she can have a thigh or two, once in awhile. But again - IF she wants chicken on a regular basis THEN she should consider not having thighs each time, and switch out with breast. Because at 50% fat, including the skin, she would get a lot more food AND a lot more nutrition, by choosing the lower-fat poultry option.

You can't just say "oh I'm going to eat fats, because fats aren't unhealthy." That statement is false. SOME fats are not unhealthy. Some fats are very unhealthy. HIGH fat diets, regardless of what type, are unhealthy.
Eating a balanced menu that includes fats, is healthy. Eating an UNbalanced menu that is HIGH in fat, is unhealthy. Eating an UNbalanced menu by someone who doesn't know that they're eating UNhealthy fats, and not fats that are not unhealthy, is really REALLY unhealthy.
In addition, many people (obviously, otherwise the phrase "Western Diet" wouldn't be a thing) mistakenly conclude that high fat diets can also mean processed foods, fortified grains, plenty of carbs, well-marbled meats and bacon. The term itself is vague. "High Fat" - means eating lots of fat. It doesn't mean eating low carb. It doesn't mean eating low sugar. It doesn't mean cutting out the processed lunch foods. It means - oddly enough - lots of fat. Someone who is ignorant about NUTRITION but wants to lose weight, who reads a few posts on the internet that says "I eat all the fatty foods I want and lost weight!" will think "hey - I can do this too!" and load up on the bacon. And then they gain weight, or worse - end up in the hospital.
True. Basically, any food that comes from Mother Nature is a healthy food. Foods that do not - or are adulterated into a highly processed form - are not a healthy food. Butter, animal fat, cream, avocados, any fat from nature is ok. When you get into high fat foods that are not from nature (a cake, high in both fat and sugar), Hostess, all those are not good for you and shouldn't be eaten that often. I know people who eat quite a bit of bacon and they do fine. I know people who eat quite a bit of bacon, and lots of pasta, and cookies, potato chips, yada yada, who are not doing fine. I'm not saying that a diet like Atkins is the only way to go, but I do think that fats, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meats, fish, eggs, etc., all have nutritional benefits, and a lot less sugar than low-fat and nonfat. I personally couldn't eat a diet high in fats, but I'll eat the healthy fats while eating (more of) the other healthy foods.
I think that people on here all have their opinions. And I would have no idea how to figure out who is right and who is talking out of their butt. I'm personally gonna continue to eat my chicken thigh with skin, my regular sour cream, my regular creamer, etc. And I know I will lose weight and I can't guarantee I'll be totally healthy, but hey, I came from two parents who died at 90, so I think that gives me a nice running start.

I'm personally gonna continue to eat my chicken thigh with skin, my regular sour cream, my regular creamer, etc. And I know I will lose weight and I can't guarantee I'll be totally healthy, but hey, I came from two parents who died at 90, so I think that gives me a nice running start.

Yes, I once read that the way to live long was to choose your parents wisely. My dad died at 78, but my Mom is still chugging along at 86. Her uncle is starting to have serious health problems, though. (He's 91.)
