Why Fat Shaming Is Good For Your Health*|*Steve Miller

There are a number of threads in different forums about people commenting on weight. It seems an observation about weight quickly leads to allegations of "fat shaming".

Steve Miller in the above link puts forth the proposition that fat shaming is a good thing.

What do others think?

Not all people are fat from over eating.. Sometimes it's genetic and sometimes it's medical. Shaming fat people under the guise of " for their health" is nothing less than just being an inconsiderate, judgmental a-hole.

I'm just playing devils advocate here, but if someone you cared about was doing something else harmful to themselves (drugs, drinking) would you intervene?

Except that it doesn't work. Two different studies:

‘Fat shaming’ doesn’t work, a new study says - The Washington Post

Quote:
Not only do people who report day-to-day discrimination not lose weight, they actually gain weight.

"Our results show that weight discrimination does not encourage weight loss, and suggest that it may even exacerbate weight gain," the study's lead author, Sarah Jackson, said in a statement. "Previous studies have found that people who experience discrimination report comfort eating. Stress responses to discrimination can increase appetite, particularly for unhealthy, energy-dense food."

In 2006 and again in 2010, a new study, led by psychologist Angelina Sutin at the Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, Fla., collected the body mass indexes of 6,157 Americans ages 50 and over who were either normal weight, overweight or obese, Today reported. The research team found that overweight people who faced weight discrimination were over two times more likely to become obese by the end of the study. Participants who were obese when the study began and had experienced weight discrimination were three times more likely to still be obese in 2010. "Rather than motivating individuals to lose weight, weight discrimination increases risk for obesity," Sutin summarized her findings.

Oh gosh, I disagree with this article on so many levels.

I have a current thread on C-D in another sub-forum regarding how certain medications can cause significant weight gain.

Fat shaming is NEVER a good idea.

For one thing what constitutes excess weight is a matter of opinion. One person might be considered pleasantly plump by anther person. Someone else might think that same person is fat. Either way no one has a right to make pronouncements about others' bodies. The reasons behind weight are too complicated for your average Joe or Jane to go around making judgments.

Fat shaming is a bad idea especially with children it can tear away at their self esteem it's also not an effective method of encouraging someone to be healthier. With strangers better not, do it often enough you're likely to run into the wrong person and you might get your teeth knocked out, there are violent folks out there.

Oh, please... some snide comment made in a fast-food line isn't made by someone who cares one iota about the other person's health - it's just rudeness meant to belittle. And as often as not, it's made by someone for whom a fit figure comes easily (and I say this as just such a person - naturally fit, not a shamer) or who enjoys working out and fitness. And, of course, the self-appointed shamers are the ones who decide for what people need to be shamed, and those things that are okay (invariably, the unhealthy indulgences they themselves enjoy).

It is still none of your business. You should love them and not care how they look. And looks are what it usually boils down to.
