Wow even sugar ? That was going to be my "go to" food for a treat.
Staying away from animal proteins is way more realistic to me.
BTW how much animal protein do you eat? If it's like a pound a day then yes, you have a problem but if it's only a few ounces or even half a pound a day, being mostly unprocessed, then you should not worry about cutting it out.
You can have SOME sugar, just don't overdo it. And there's a great sugar substitute called stevia. It comes from a plant and it's three times sweeter than sugar. In coffee or tea, I'll use stevia plus a teeny bit of real sugar for flavor.
My dr. did say to cut out carbs--he didn't tell me HOW to cut out carbs though so it sort of left me with not too much to eat. But I've substituted almond flour for white flour in cooking--there are a lot of recipes under paleo diet. I'm not into a paleo diet but you can get a few ideas from it since they don't do a lot of carbs. I eat a handful of nuts for a snack, sometimes a dish of raisins and nuts.
The Paleo Diet makes sense to me but might be hard to follow if you travel or eat out a lot like I do.
What do you guys think about Greek Yogurt ? I find Yogurt in general helps me with acid reflux and stomach issues while traveling.
I really like grains. Some have a lot of fiber in them (oats). I think I would wilt away without any of those.

It's not really a question of what's realistic. Removing or reducing sugar will do more to improve your blood lipid profile than removing or reducing animal proteins.
"A rigorously done new study shows that those with the highest sugar intake had a four-fold increase in their risk of heart attacks compared to those with the lowest intakes."

I had no idea sugar was related to heart problems. Thanks for posting.
I'd recommend reading Wheat Belly Total Health or Eat Fat, Get Thin (or another similar book). Prepare to have your mind blown...
Don't believe everything you read in Wheat Belly. A lot of it has been debunked.
Whole grains are not the enemy. If you do not like wheat no need to get rid of other whole grains which are very healthy.
The lowest heart disease risk, the lowest body fat, and the greatest longevity is associated with a low-animal protein, high complex carbohydrate, high fiber, whole food diet. There is a ton of research on this.
And, yes, processed sugar has a whole litany of potential health problems.
